Dr. Lorena R. Lizarraga-Valderrama obtained her B.A + MSc in Biology from University Simon Bolivar, Venezuela in 2007. She completed a MSc in Molecular Biology at Pierre and Mary Curie University in 2009 after being awarded a full scholarship from the Fundayacucho-Embassy of France convention in the frame of a national competition. Subsequently, Dr. Lizarraga-Valderrama granted a PhD in Biomedical Sciences in peripheral nerve regeneration at The University of Westminster in collaboration with University College of London, Kroto Research Institute, and NEURIMP. Then, she worked as KTP Scientist Associate at University of Plymouth/Made For Life Organics in 2018. In 2019, she was appointed Research Fellow in Neuroscience at the University of Nottingham, UK in the laboratory of Dr. Graham Sheridan to study the mechanobiology of aging neurons, memory formation and cognitive resilience.
Investigate how aging and neurodegeneration affect the mechanobiology of neurons, glial cells (astrocytes, microglia and oligodendrocytes) and hippocampal brain tissue.
Develop innovative technologies (medical devices and drug delivery systems) to promote and support nerve regeneration using biodegradable scaffolds and growth factors. I studied how the microarchitecture and biochemical cues that surround neurons affect the regeneration process in the peripheral nerve system (PNS).
Elucidate mechanisms that provide a suitable environment to lead nerve regeneration in the central nervous system (CNS). I also will be studying more specifically if age- or disease alterations that are related to mechanotransduction produce changes in calcium homeostasis or electrophysiological properties of glial cells and hippocampal neurons.
