Current Research

My current position in the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre is as Senior Research Fellow in MR Physics and Image Analysis. In this role I will be developing novel MR imaging and analysis methodologies in line with the BRC research themes, with the aim of creating a direct impact on patient treatment. One of my main projects is the development of liver magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) methodology for the study of chronic liver disease. My other research focuses include the development of MRE methods for the lung to study interstitial lung disease, and for the gastrointestinal tract, finite element model based simulation of liver MRE, and advanced MRE inversion methods (reconstruction of the biomechanical properties) as a collaboration with the Mathematics Department.

Past Research

After my doctoral studies I spent five years in industry working in R&D software development for a variety of image processing and computer vision problems, including face detection and recognition, object tracking, video compression, and image compression for teleradiology.

I returned to academia to work on the development of MRI-based biomarkers for drug development at the University of Manchester and in collaboration with AstraZeneca. In this role I developed imaging methodologies and analysis methods for dynamic contrast enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) for cancer therapy, and oxygen-enhanced MRI (OE-MRI) for the lung to study chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). During this time I developed novel compartmental modelling analysis methods for OE-MRI in the lung and for cancer, which were subsequently patented.

Following this I moved to Canada where I worked at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Toronto on a project funded by the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research. In this role I developed magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) methods to measure the biomechanical properties of clinical prostate, and also worked on the development of MRI-based imaging pipelines for the correlation of histopathology data with in vivo diagnostic MR images.

My next position was at the University of Sheffield where I worked on a European Union funded project (VPH-DARE@IT) to improve the early and differential diagnosis of dementia subtypes using computational methods. In this role I developed a finite element model based simulation platform for MRE of the brain to model the influence of cranial anatomy and differing wave delivery methodology on MRE-measured biomechanical properties. I also worked on analysis methods for MR arterial spin labelling (ASL) to measure cerebral hypo-perfusion in dementia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
