How do I access Central Short Courses?
Research training courses are open to all postgraduate research students and research staff. To take a look at the courses on offer visit Central Short Courses. To book a place on a course or view your Personal Training Account, you will need to login to CSC with your usual University username and password.
New staff and students
You will only able to log into Central Short Courses once your University IT account has been set up. If your IT account has been set up but you are still unable to access Central Short Courses, please email the Central Short Courses team
How do I find and book onto courses?
Some Schools require their postgraduate research students to take particular courses in the Researcher Development Programme. Please check with your School for details.
It is important that you talk to your supervisor about your training requirements and the courses that will best meet your needs. You need to decide which are most useful for you. Do remember, you have several years in which to take them, you don't need to register for all the courses you are interested in immediately.
You can see the full list of courses by your stage of study on our researcher training webpage. Alternatively you can browse through the full Central Short Courses listing, by category or search using keywords.

I can't attend a course I am booked on, do I need to cancel?
If you find you are unable to attend a course you have registered for, please remove your registration through Central Short Courses as this will allow someone on the waiting list the chance to attend. To cancel your place within three days of the course start date, please contact the Central Short Courses team or call 0115 823 2888.

How does the waiting list work?
If your chosen course is fully booked, you can place yourself on the waiting list through Central Short Courses for the specific course date you have selected. If a place becomes available, the system will allocate that place on a 'first come - first served' basis. An email notification will be sent to your official @nottingham.ac.uk e-mail address, so please check this e-mail account regularly.
The training providers regularly review the waiting lists for their courses and wherever possible endeavour to run additional instances of courses with long waiting lists. Hence, by adding your name to the waiting list the providers will be able to see courses that have high demand.

Will I receive any confirmation that my booking was successful?
When you book onto a course in Central Short Courses, an email confirmation will immediately be sent to your @nottingham.ac.uk email address. If the course is fully booked, you will be given the option to add your name to the waiting list. The email confirmation also includes more information about the course, including the venue and any pre-requisites. Please ensure you read this email carefully.
An email reminder will also be sent to your @nottingham.ac.uk email address a few days before the course starts.
Why do I need a certificate of attendance and how do I print it?
Your school/academic supervisor may expect you to complete a certain number of training units each academic year. An attendance certificate can be printed and submitted to your supervisor during your annual review to demonstrate that you have completed the required training.

What are faculty training programmes?
Faculty training programme courses are specifically designed for and restricted to students within the particular faculty. These courses are usually compulsory and cannot be booked through Central Short Courses in the same way as those in the main training programme.
If you are eligible for faculty specific training, an email will be sent to your @nottingham.ac.uk account when the training programme opens for booking with instructions on how to book your place.
I can't register for an online course as I am already attending a classroom based course on the same day, what do I do?
Central Short Courses will not allow you to book onto more than one course that is running at the same time. If you would like to book onto a classroom based and online course running on the same day, please contact email@example.com
