Why Boots and FAQ

Choosing Boots for DSE Eye Tests

The University has considered a number of providers of eye test vouchers as well as trialling an on-site provision. Currently, our agreement is with Boots Opticians, administered by their partner ASE.

Features include:

  • There are well over 600 stores across the UK so staff on all sites will be able to access the service easily.
  • Staff users will get a full eye examination as part of the standard eye test.
  • Having a regular eye test can help to identify other medical issues as well as sight problems.
  • The choice of spectacles for DSE-only use is good with the option to choose some designer frames at reduced cost.
  • The lenses are scratch resistant and have an AR coating.
  • Streamlined invoicing direct to the University Finance Department will cover the expenses so no need for individual claims.
  • Advantage card points are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I organise an Eye Test?

Just complete the on-line applicaton by following the links in this short explanation page on Workspace.

What is the maximum that will be paid if I need glasses for DSE work?

The University will be charged £15+vat for the eye test and £29+vat for the glasses (as of Jan 2016), if you only need them for DSE work. The University will only be charged for a DSE-only prescription. For the majority of people, their near and middle vision are similar and therefore they need the same lenses for reading and for computer work - these would not fall under the category of DSE-only.

Where can I go for my eye test?

Any Boots opticians and related partner opticians - you will be presented with a list of options when you enter your preferred location in the on-line application form.

Can I use an optician of my own choice, perhaps because I have been using them for many years for my eye tests?

Unfortunately, for the DSE-related eye tests, this must go through the Boots scheme in order for the costs to be covered by the University.

If I work at one of the University sites away from Nottingham, am I still entitled to use the system?

Yes, definitely. The scheme applies to all staff DSE users, no matter where they are based in the UK.
