Nottingham Potential Summer School

The Nottingham Potential Summer School is a unique opportunity for high-achieving Year 12 students from the Midlands to join us at the University of Nottingham for a week of living, learning and socialising like a university student – for free!

Applications for the 2020 Summer School are now closed


To apply, you must: 

  • be in Year 12 at the start of this academic year 

  • be attending a state-funded, non-fee-paying school in the Midlands

  • have at least six GCSE's at grades 9-5 (or equivalent) including English and Maths 

  • be studying relevant subjects for the strand applied for


 Priority will then be given to you if you meet all or most of the following criteria

    • You were eligible for free School Meals whilst you were at schools OR are in a household in receipt of a means-tested benefit OR have a household income under £35,000

    • You live in a neighbourhood with a low rate of progression to higher education and / or a high level of socio-economic disadvantage

    • You are in, or have been in, local authority care/ looked after

    • You are a young person with caring responsibilities for a member of your family 

    • You have a disability affecting your studies

    • You are a refugee

    • You are the first generation in your family to attend higher education 

    • You attend a school or college with a below average A level point score and / or a low rate of progression to higher education

For our 2020 Nottingham Potential Summer School we are offering the following streams:

Week one: Sunday 28 June 2020 – Friday 3 July 2020

Subject streams A level subject(s) or relevant level 3 qualifications required

Law, politics and international relations

No specific subjects

Nursing and midwifery 

A science subject at A level or BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and social care or applied science


Chemistry and one further science from biology, physics or maths

Psychology and philosophy

No specific subjects


Week two: Sunday 12 July 2020 – Friday 17 July 2020

Subject streams A level subject(s) or relevant level 3 qualifications required

Architecture, engineering and physics

Business, maths and economics

Taking one or more of Physics, Maths, Technology or geography

No specific subjects

English, American and film studies


Medicine and medical sciences

Biology and Chemistry

Sports, physio and nutrition

Biology or BTEC National Extended Diploma in sport and exercise science or applied science

Sustainable chemistry
