Nottingham Potential Summer School

The Nottingham Potential Summer School is a unique opportunity for high-achieving Year 12 students from the Midlands to join us at the University of Nottingham for a week of living, learning and socialising like a university student – for free!

Is it for you?

For our 2019 Nottingham Potential Summer School we are offering the following streams:

Week one: Sunday 30 June 2019 – Friday 5 July 2019
Subject streams A level subject(s) or relevant level 3 qualifications required
Law, politics and international relations No specific subjects

Medicine and medical sciences

Nursing and midwifery 

Biology and chemistry


A science subject at A level or BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and social care or applied science

Pharmacy Chemistry and one further science from biology, physics or maths
Psychology and philosophy No specific subjects

 

Week two: Sunday 14 July 2019 – Friday 19 July 2019
Subject streams A level subject(s) or relevant level 3 qualifications required

Architecture, engineering and physics

Business, maths and economics

Taking one or more of Physics, maths, technology or geography


No specific subjects

English, American and film studies English
Medicine and medical sciences Biology and chemistry
Sports, physio and nutrition Biology or BTEC National Extended Diploma in sport and exercise science or applied science
Sustainable chemistry Chemistry 


To apply for the summer school, you must:

  • go to a local/state maintained school in the Midlands
  • have at least 7 A*–C or 9–5 grades at GCSE (or equivalent) including English and Maths
  • be studying relevant subjects for the strand applied for

Places are limited, so first priority will be given to students who are also (one of the following):

  • living in a household which receives Child Tax Credit, Universal Credit or an equivalent means-tested benefit (evidence required)
  • living with a disability affecting your studies
  • in, or have been in, local authority care/looked after
  • a young person with caring responsibilities for a member of your family
  • currently living independently or estranged from your family

Priority is then given to students who (two of the following):

  • live in a household with an income under £35,000
  • are the first generation in the family to attend university
  • attend a school/college with an average point score per academic entry of under 32.73 (teachers can advise on this)

Where subject strands are oversubscribed, priority will be given to eligible students who have more A* and A grades.

Priority will be given to students who are under the age of 18 at the time of summer school and who are currently in Year 12.
