Nottingham Potential Summer School

The Nottingham Potential Summer School is a unique opportunity for high-achieving Year 12 students from the Midlands to join us at the University of Nottingham for a week of living, learning and socialising like a university student – for free!

Is it for you?

For our 2018 Nottingham Potential Summer School we are offering the following streams:

Week one: Sunday 1 July 2018 – Friday 6 July 2018

Subject streams A level subject(s) required
Architecture, engineering and physics Taking one or more of Physics, Maths, Technology or Geography
Law, politics and international relations No specific subjects
Nursing and midwifery  A Science subject
Pharmacy Chemistry and one further science from Biology, Physics or Maths
Psychology and philosophy No specific subjects


Week two: Sunday 15 July 2018 – Friday 20 July 2018

Subject streams A level subject(s) required
Business, maths and economics No specific subjects
English, American and film studies English
Medicine Biology and Chemistry
Sports, Physio and Nutrition Biology or BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science or Applied Science
Sustainable chemistry Chemistry 

To apply for the summer school, you must:

  • go to a local/state maintained school in the Midlands
  • have at least 7 A*–C or 9–5 grades at GCSE (or equivalent) including English and Maths
  • be studying relevant subjects for the strand applied for

Places are limited, so first priority will be given to students who are also (one of the following):

  • living in a household which receives Child Tax Credit or an equivalent means-tested benefit (evidence required)
  • have a disability affecting your studies
  • are in, or have been in, local authority care/looked after

Priority is then given to students who (two of the following):

  • live in a household with an income under £42,600
  • have parents who have not been to university
  • attend a school/college with an average point score per academic entry of under 32.11 (teachers can advise on this)

Where subject strands are oversubscribed, priority will be given to eligible students who have more A* and A grades.

Priority will be given to students who are under the age of 18 at the time of summer school and who are currently in Year 12.
