Research within the Faculty of Science was recognised by the latest Research Excellence Framework (2021) as being 'world-class' and 'internationally excellent'. There is a huge range of ground-breaking research activity being undertaken within the faculty. The university's science-related research priority areas undertake world-class research and knowledge transfer to address global issues and challenges. Further research activities also take place within the individual schools.

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded £29.1 million to establish the UK’s most powerful Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner as a national facility.

The Faculty of Science undertakes research that has a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals and populations, societies and our planet.  The interdisciplinary research of our seven schools and strong collaborations results in a diversity of approaches to advance academia, industry and commerce.  Our cross-faculty research is aligned to address many of the Sustainable Development Goals, from affordable clean energy and zero hunger, to good health and wellbeing and sustainable communities.  Our community of postgraduate, early career and established researchers connect in a world-class physical and digital environment and work closely with industrial partners and academic collaborators across the globe, ensuring our work has impact to make a real difference to the quality of people’s lives.
