Climbing sessions

We offer a range of climbing sessions for all levels of climbers.

Our expert climbing team can run you through the basics of climbing, suggest improvements to your technique and demonstrate more advanced skills. 

New climbers are required to complete our Learn to Climb session before climbing unsupervised. 

If you have never climbed before there are various taster sessions available where you can just try climbing for the first time.

How to book

  • All climbing sessions must be booked in advance
  • All sessions are available to book online (excluding Learn to lead climb and Engage) or by calling 0115 74 87000
  • Please contact our climbing team if you require additional information
Please note, these sessions are only available to members of the public who hold a current UoN sport and fitness membership

Routsetting:

Route setting will be taking place on the lead panels on Fridays for the first three weeks of Term 3:  

20th & 27th Apr, 4th & 11th May

Our climbing sessions

Learn to climb:

This three hour climbing session will take you through all the basic skills for using the climbing wall safely. This includes  bouldering and using our auto belay. This is for new climbers - no previous experience or equipment is required. Once completed, the Learn to climb session will allow you to use the climbing wall unsupervised once you have completed the registration process.

Bouldering taster:

A short introduction to bouldering, our instructors will take you through the basic skills needed to use our bouldering wall. This is for new boulderers - no previous experience or equipment is required. Once completed, this session will allow you to use the bouldering wall unsupervised. Please note, new climbers will still need to complete our Learn to climb session to be able to use the roped section of the climbing wall unsupervised.

Auto belay taster:

Our equipment allows you to clip and climb without a partner. This short taster shows you how to use the auto belay system safely and effectively. Once completed, this session will allow you to use the auto belay unsupervised. Please note, new climbers will still need to complete our Learn to climb session to be able to use the roped section of the climbing wall unsupervised.

Parent / guardian climbing supervisor

If you’ve not climbed before, or would like to refresh your skills, we’ve developed two brand new modules for parents / guardians. These short 1 hour sessions will provide you with the skills needed to supervise your child safely on the climbing wall and are required if you have not already registered with us as a competent climber / boulderer.

Module 1: This is for the auto belay and bouldering wall only. The session will cover the important safety points of fitting harnesses, connecting to the auto belay and safe use of the bouldering wall.

Module 2: This is for the main climbing wall. The session will cover the required safety aspects associated with using the wall including tying on, belaying and lowering. Module 1 must be completed first unless you are already registerd to use the bouldering wall.

Improvers' session:

This drop in session is for registered climbers wishing to improve their climbing skills and technique. It's ideal for all standards of climbers and our expert instructors will be able to assist with the areas you want to improve. There is a maximum of four climbers in each group.

Advanced Coaching

This is for experienced climbers who have reached a plateau and are looking to improve their overall climbing ability. Book a session with our experienced coach who will assess your current performance and design a training plan to help you reach your true potential. Contact the Climbing wall team to book your first session (subject to availability of instructor and space). Max of two climbers per session.

Intermediate coaching:

This for intermediate climbers looking to improve fitness and technique to climb more difficult routes and boulder problems. Attendees must be registered climbers and climbing at least grade 5 on the main wall or V2 boulder problems. You will also need your own shoes. There is a maximum of four climbers in each group.

Lead climbing taster:

A short introduction to lead climbing, this session will introduce you to the basics of lead climbing. This is for experienced climbers who are able to top rope climb grade F5 without rests or assistance from rope. Please bring your own harness. Please note, climbers will need to complete our Learn to lead climb course to lead climb unsupervised.

Learn to lead climb:

This is for experienced climbers who are able to top rope climb grade F5 without rests or assistance from the rope. Please bring your own harness which must be approved for lead climbing. The training is conducted over three x two hour sessions. This session will allow you to lead climb unsupervised.
