Goalball Club

Nottinghamshire Sheriffs Logo

The Nottinghamshire Sheriffs Goalball Club was set up by the University in partnership with My Sight Nottinghamshire in 2010.

We are one of Goalball UK's legacy clubs and are focussed on growing the sport within the University and out into the wider community.

IGoalball is a great sport which is good for your all-round fitness, coordination, spatial awareness, flexibility and strength.

What is Goalball?

Goalball is a Paralympic sport which was designed for people with visual impairments. As everyone wears blacked out eyeshades during the games, it is open to sighted players too.

The game is played on a court the size of a volleyball court and is marked out with string, which is taped down. Two teams of three people try to score in the opposition’s nine-metre-wide goal, using a ball with a bell in it.

For more details check out the Goalball UK website or this club video

How can I join?

You can just turn up to one of our training sessions, or contact our Disability Sport Officer before you attend. UoN sports and fitness membership is not required to play, but you will need to complete a registration from and pay £3 per session (£5 for those who require transport to Sutton Bonington).

New volunteers are always welcome as we look to increase our club programme.

There are lots of opportunities that you could get involved with including coaching, supporting training sessions and competitions, as well as help with managing promotions and social media activity. For more information, please contact us.

What should I bring?

You will need to wear comfortable sports clothing; tracksuit bottoms, a long-sleeved top and trainers for example. We will provide you with the following, unless you would like to bring your own.

  • Blacked-out masks
  • Knee and elbow pads
  • Goal balls
  • Other training equipment

Club training and competitions

Our sessions cater for all abilities from beginner through to elite level.
