It is important to showcase some of the insights of disabled students at the University.
This page aims to provide you with the opportunity, to find out more about what it's like to access sport, fitness and physical activity at Nottingham, as well as the challenges and highlights that some of our students and alumni experienced.
If you have any feedback or experiences that you would like to share please contact the Disability Sport Officer.
"Focus on what works for you and what you enjoy. Make the most of accessible inclusive opportunities available to you at University."
Issy is about to go in to her fifth year as a Medic at Nottingham. After a difficult first year, she decided to explore what sporting opportunities there were, that she could get involved with.
Issy joined the Sailing club in her second year and enjoyed it so much, that she went on to become the clubs' welfare officer in her third. This was the spark that she needed and since then she has embraced all things sports welfare, helping to make a huge impact on the lives of other students struggling with their mental health.
You can find out more about Issy's story and hopefully gain some ideas and inspiration here...
Tom completed his MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine in 2020. He combined studying full time with his commitments as a parasport scholar at the University.
Tom was a key member of the University Futsal squad and played for their first team on weekly basis during term time. He also had to balance this with his international sporting ambitions with the England Partially Sighted Futsal squad.
Tom talks openly about his experiences as a parasport scholar and how he managed his commitments on and off the court.

Jessica is a third year student with autism. Last year she really pushed herself out of her comfort zone, to get more involved in the different sporting opportunities.
She attended the Engage Inclusive Sports day in the first term and through that discovered a love of climbing. Jessica also attended the inclusive trampoline and horse riding sessions on a regular basis.
Alongside Sean, she was also the sports officer for the disabled students network and volunteered as an inclusive sports leader.

Sean has been studying at the University for four years and for three of those was a para-sport scholar.
He has been training and playing with the University badminton club since his first year - making valuable contributions to their BUCS team results.
As well as competing internationally on the parabadminton circuit, Sean also immersed himself in to a number of voluntary roles, including sports officer for the disabled students network and a volunteer on the Men's Health Active programme.

Just get stuck into everything and try out anything you want. Your abilities may make some sports extremely hard to do but you also may excel at something new. All clubs are very welcoming and will allow anyone to come and try out a few sessions so you should give it a go too!
As well as a variety of fitness classes, we also offer supported fitness sessions and gym quiet time, as an option for disabled members.
