UoN Badminton finish the season on a high taking the Trophy and Championship titles

Badminton BBW Champions '22

Following on from a superb showing at BUCS Nationals, the University of Nottingham Men's Badminton first and second teams looked to round out their year with more BUCS success on home soil at BUCS Big Wednesday. Standing in their way was the University of Warwick 2's in the National Trophy and the University of Loughborough first team in the Championship Cup final.

BUCS Men's Badminton Championship

The Men’s 1st team took on Loughborough 1s in the Championship final following huge successes at BUCS Nationals earlier in the year, where UoN took home a massive 6 medals in Badminton. They also scored a wipeout 8-0 win against Derby 1s in the championship semi-final, earning the team a place in the final.

Team List

Singles - Johnnie Torjussen

Singles- Sijie Wei

Doubles- Sam Smith and Harry Huang

Doubles- David Hong and Perry Ng

The team performed extremely well to achieve an impressive 7-1 victory over Loughborough, with all winning matches scored 2-0 to the University of Nottingham! One to watch Johnnie Torjussen won both of his singles matches 2-0, as did Sijie Wei which was an incredible feat from both, whilst new doubles pairing Sam Smith and Harry Huang proved successful as a partnership, also winning both of their games 2-0. David Hong and Perry Ng lost their first game but won their second in a marathon match, contributing to the overall 7-1 win for the University of Nottingham!

Final result: 7-1, University of Nottingham win and are BUCS Champions!

BUCS Men's Badminton Trophy

After beating the University of Southampton’s 1st team 7-1 in the semi finals, the University of Nottingham Men’s Badminton 2’s secured their shot at the BUCS National Trophy here at the David Ross Sports Village. In the final, the Nottingham team took on the University of Warwick Men’s 2nd team.

Team List

Singles - Benson Min Kaung

Singles - Daniel Clarke

Doubles - Ahraf Alam and Steven Elliott

Doubles - Harry Goode and Harry Lines

As one of the first #GreenandGold teams to represent the University of Nottingham on BUCS Big Wednesday with their 9.30am start time, the team took to the court hoping to start the day with a victory. Opponents Warwick had also reached the final by winning their semi final match by a score line of 7-1, beating the University of Manchester 1st team and ultimately setting up a well contested Trophy final. With four singles and four doubles matches in store, the University of Nottingham could take confidence from an earlier result this season where they drew 4-4 with Warwick’s first team.

Clarke and Kaung opened the proceedings for the University of Nottingham in singles competition against the Warwick duo of Weekes and Xi Yie respectively, but it would not be the start that team had hoped for with both men losing the opening matches 2 games to 0. However, in the first doubles matches of the contest, it would be Nottingham who would take the upper hand as Harry Lines and Harry Goode defeated the Warwick pair of Wong and Barbar, whilst Ashraf Alam and Steven Elliot would also win against Lu and Li - both decisive 2-0 victories levelling the overall contest at 2-2.

In the reverse singles matches Clarke took on Weekes with the latter prevailing 2-0, and in the final singles match of the contest, Warwick's Xi Yie would also come out on top by the same scoreline, making the match 4-2 in favour of Warwick with all four wins coming in the singles. With two doubles matches left to play, the Nottingham teams were buoyed by their earlier wins as well as the roaring crowd in attendance. It would be the Nottingham team of Harry's (Lines and Goode) taking to the court first against Lu and Li. The first game was tense with both knowing the importance of taking a lead, but thankfully it would be the Nottingham pair who would take the initial game, before pushing on from that success to claim the match 2-0.

This meant that the National Trophy was riding on the scoreline of the doubles match between the #GreenandGold's Alam and Elliott, who took on Warwick's Wong and Barbar. With everyone aware of the implications of the match, the first game was incredibly tense and went all the way to a 20-20 scoreline before Nottingham took the game 22-20! That first game score levelled the total points at 244 for the match between the two teams meaning that whoever would be victorious in the final set would take home the Trophy! With momentum in their favour and the match the Alam and Elliott fought hard to keep a lead throughout the set, being 11-10 ahead at the break before building a 19-5 lead. A superb victory was in their grasp and the duo did not let it slip taking a definitive 21-16 victory in the last game of the day to claim the BUCS Trophy for the University of Nottingham by the slender margin of only 5 points! After the close ending, Head Coach Martyn Lewis told us "the ending was so intense but the boys played really well and came through!"

Final result: 4-4, University of Nottingham win on points countback and are BUCS Trophy winners!
