WBB BBW'22

In 2022, BUCS Big Wednesday saw Wheelchair Basketball added to the event for the very first time with the University of Nottingham qualifying comfortably for the final. University of Nottingham’s Open 1st team played brilliantly throughout the year, winning every match they played to secure their place in the final on home turf at BUCS Big Wednesday. In the semi-final, they achieved an incredible 81-12 win over Durham 1s, leaving the team feeling confident for their final against Cardiff Met.

University of Nottingham squad: Will Smith, Jonny Wilson, Max Cooper, Dan May, James Hazell, Luke Holland; Reserves: Felix Nicklin, Stuart Dick, Emily Evans, Sarah Ellenby, Georgia Hill, Ruby Weston, Lewis Evans, Charlotte Appiah.

After an tense opening period, the end of the first quarter saw the University of Nottingham and Cardiff Met drawing at 10 points apiece.

However, the University of Nottingham found their rhythm and began to get fired up as they came back in the second quarter to finish 31-28 up at half time! A number of spectacular interceptions prevented Cardiff from scoring, and an incredible offence meant that the #GreenandGold were able to rack up points!

The score at the end of the third quarter was 44-36 to the University of Nottingham thanks to a brilliant buzzer beater, and the squad went on to drive home their advantage in the fourth quarter, winning the match 66-40!

This incredible performance means that the University of Nottingham have made history at BUCS Big Wednesday in 2022 by becoming the first ever BUCS Wheelchair Basketball Champions!

Final result: University of Nottingham 66-40 Cardiff Metropolitan University, and the University of Nottingham are crowned BUCS Wheelchair Champions.
