Nottingham Knights celebrate their most successful season to date

This season has been one of UoN Cheerleading’s most successful yet, with two teams and three competitions across the season. The Nottingham Knights have a Level 1 All Girl and Level 3 All Girl team who spent months preparing for their competitions which began in Term 2.

We detailed the success of Level 3 at Future Cheer University Nationals on 13th February here, so you can read all about the ins and outs of the day where Level 3 achieved their first win of the season. Exactly one month later on the 13th March, the teams headed to Derby for BCA University Nationals. This event was even more exciting for our #GreenandGold athletes because it was the Nottingham Knights Level 1 teams debut. 19 out of the 21 girls on the team had never performed at a cheer competition before so they did incredibly well to place 4th out of 14 in their division on their first outing. Level 3 also had a great day, placing second in their division after putting on an incredible routine full of upgrades and new skills.

The final competition of the season was the ICC British Open, held here in Nottingham at the Motorpoint Arena. It was a bittersweet day because although the excitement and team spirit to compete was high, everyone knew it was their last time performing with this year’s teams and for many, their last time ever competing in cheerleading. Overall, the competition was incredible, with huge support for the #GreenandGold from family and friends due to it being the Knights’ home competition. Our Level 3 squad competed first at around 4pm, followed by Level 1 at around 4:45pm. Both teams put out incredible runs that they were so proud of, and you can watch these routines on UoN Cheerleading’s Instagram account (@uoncheerleading). Both teams then headed back to Lenton for a post-competition BBQ which was a highlight of the day, and a great way to close out the competition season. After the feast, the squads headed back for awards at 9:30pm, and first to be announced was the Level 1 squad who won their ten team division! The squad were completely deserving of the win after giving an incredible performance. We caught up with Level 1 Coach Sadie Clark after the result was made, with Clark saying:

‘The team looked really good today so we are all really happy! Their routine came together pretty last minute so they have really pulled it out of the bag today and I am so proud.’

Following this came the Level 3 awards. The Nottingham Knights waited anxiously for the top three to be called and rushed to the mat when their name was in the mix. Then, while everyone was still running onto the mat, they were announced as the winners of their division, making them 2 time National Champions this season! With a huge score of 93.5, their highest of the season, the team were well deserving of their win and were over the moon to end the year on such a high. Coach Jodie Kelt shared her feelings about the competition and the season as a whole:

‘I feel really happy, we have come back after BCA with a double win with Level 3 and and Level 1 and both teams fully deserved it! We have had an amazing season with two first places and one second, which is the best Knights have ever done!’

Congratulations to both of our Level 1 and Level 3 squads on an incredible season. The club and University of Nottingham Sport would like to say a special well done to our cheerleading coaches Sadie and Jodie for their unwavering dedication and hard work throughout the year, coaching their teams alongside their degrees and leading them to winning national championships!
