University of Nottingham narrowly miss out on the Women's Doubles at BUCS Big Wednesday



After a unbelievable BUCS season and run of form leading up to BUCS Big Wednesday, it was a mixed result for University of Nottingham Tennis who had a Women's team in both the Trophy and Championship finals.

BUCS Trophy

University of Nottingham squad: 

  • Emma Sawkings
  • Maisie Wood
  • Savannah Yardley
  • Anisha Sood

Final Result : University of Nottingham 2s 4-0 Loughborough 2s 

In the first doubles, the #GreenandGold were represented by Emma Sawkings and Maisie Wood who won 7-5 and 6-4. It was a tricky outing for the team as the Loughborough team were serving underarm; however, they finished off on a high when Maisie hit a great first serve and Emma following up a forehand volley for the winner.

The second doubles followed suit like the first pair did. Savannah and Anisha won their fixture 6-2 and 6-1. Very routine in their win, ruthlessly efficient which saw them produce a fantastic win. 

After the #GreenandGold put the doubles to bed, the singles began. Savannah Yardley started off strong winning her sets, 6-1 and 6-1. Only losing the first game, Savannah stormed ahead - winning 11 games in a row! Anisha wrapped up the competition wining 6-4 and 7- meaning the #GreenandGold were 4-0 up and won the trophy final!

BUCS Championship 

University of Nottingham squad:

Final Result : University of Nottingham 3-3 Loughborough –  [Loughborough won 2-1 in shootout]

In the first doubles, Noppawan Lertcheewakarn and Annemarie Emme won sets 7-6 and 6-2. The entire doubles pairing saw and incredible combination of Noppawan’s punishing groundstrokes and incredible display of net play by Annie. Noppawan managed to seal the deal with a screaming forehand.

It was a much tougher fixture in the second doubles 2 for Milly Wood and Camila Vargas who lost 4-6 and 5-7. It was a match full of up and downs – Loughborough went 4-0, Nottingham got back to 4-4 but Loughborough played well to win 6-4. Another tight second set saw Loughborough take the win

In the first of the singles, Annemarie Emme put in a great effort but a loss in the first game with 8 deuces saw her lose overall with 2-6 and 3-6. Unfortunately, Milly Wood took another loss in the singles 1-6 and 1-6.

However, it wasn't all losses in the singles. Camila Vargas got the #GreenandGold pumped back up as she won her sets 7-6, 4-6 and 7-6 which saw her earn BUCS Player of the Match. Grinding the match over 2 hours and 30, the final set was unbelievable for Camila who saved the team 10 match and keep the Championship alive.

Noppawan followed Camila and won her sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. After After exchanging breaks and having long gruelling rallies, Noppowan showed her skill and nerve to win 6-4 and take the tie to a shoot out.


  • Camila Vargas saved so many match points, but lost 10-point tiebreak, to lose 14-16
  • Noppawan managed to pick up a win after being 6-9 down in the tiebreak to 10, saving 3 match points in a row and clinch 12-10 victory taking the tie to the final doubles tiebreak in the shootout
  • Milly & Annie paired up for the first time today; however, the Loughborough pairing were too strong for the #GreenandGold who lost 6-9

Overall, it was a valiant effort from the #GreenandGold in both the Women's Trophy and Championship. There was an unbelievable level and atmosphere in both competitions, both of our teams should be incredibly proud of their efforts today and for the entire season.
