Ollie Bignell secured the first ever Snowsport Gold for the University of Nottingham as the club enjoyed a record medal haul in the world biggest dryslope event.
BUDS, a one-day event held in Edinburgh, challenges student skiers and snowboarders in the disciplines of Freestyle, Slalom, Giant Slalom, Snowboard racing and Duals.
Nottingham’s Ollie Bignell secured two titles, the Individual Snowboard Race Duals and the Men’s Snowboard race slalom to make club history. The club president also picked up a bronze in the Men’s Snowboard Big Air to top a memorable visit to Scotland.
Bignell’s Snowboard Race Slalom win was over a second and a half clear of second place. The Nottingham student was also the only boarder to qualify for every snowboard event final in the competition.
There was notable success elsewhere in the women’s competition with all female racers finishing in the top 30 in the UK. University of Nottingham Snowports Vice-President, Robyn Marment had a fantastic event with top 10 finishes in both the Slalom and Giant Slalom (GS) races.
Speaking to University of Nottingham Sport after the event she said,
“It was a great weekend for the club, achieving our best results at BUDS. Unfortunately, covid measures meant we couldn’t bring our spectators, but we hope to be back at Hillend next year in full force.”
“4 of our individual racers/freestylers and our 1st duals race team are off to the British University Indoor Series Championships (BUISC) Finals next term to compete nationally after taking 8 medals regionally and we are excited to for what 2022 has to bring”.
University of Nottingham, Assistant Director of Sport (Performance), Alex Perry added:
“After a long period of time without competitive BUCS events it has been a relief to welcome them back. BUDS is a fantastic event and we are delighted to have enjoyed such notable success this year. Huge congratulations to Ollie, Robyn and the club on a successful event and we wish everyone the very best of luck for the Indoor Championships next year.”
