On 22 August, Badminton England held their National Championship competition which took place at the National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes.
University of Nottingham Sport Scholar, Johnnie Torjussen beat top seed and defending champion Alex Lane in the final of the National Championships to win the senior title.
Johnnie came in as second seed and avenged his defeat to Lane in the 2020 final with a 15-21, 21-18, 21-16 victory. This victory has now completed his full set of national crowns which include his Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, and Under-19 titles.
Head of Performance Badminton, Martyn Lewis, is immensely proud of Johnnie and speaking to UoN Sport about this achievement he said:
“It was a great result for Johnnie on the weekend. Things like this are achieved by hard work and enjoyment from the environment you as a player are training in. I’m thrilled that we can provide that for Johnnie here at UoN and I hope he can go from strength to strength this year.”
Everyone at the University of Nottingham Sport would like to extend a huge congratulations to Johnnie on his well-deserved win.
In addition to this fantastic result, Johnnie has been selected for England to compete in the upcoming Sudirman Cup (World Team Championship) on week commencing 20 September in Finland. England will play Japan, Malaysia and Egypt. Furthermore, Johnnie and fellow UoN Sport Scholar, Harry Huang, have been selected for another Team championship a couple of weeks later in the Thomas Cup Finals. They again will play Japan, Malaysia and Canada.
This is a fantastic success which is the result of the hard work and effort both Johnnie and Harry have put in whilst juggling their academic studies at the University of Nottingham. Make sure to keep an eye out on UoN Sport socials as we track both Johnnie's and Harry's progress across these competitions.
