Finding a specific journal article
Your lecturers may recommended specific journal articles on reading lists. If you know the exact details of a journal article - author name(s), article title, journal title, volume, part and page numbers - you can also search for it on NUsearch. Journal artices are often available in print and electronically.
Using your online reading lists
Your lecturers may have recommended you read specific journal articles to help with your studies. You can check the location of print articles and access the full text of electronic articles directly from your online reading lists [UK, China, Malaysia].
Using NUsearch
Use NUsearch [UK, China, Malaysia] to search for specific journal articles. If you are a student in the UK or China, you can find both print and electronic journals. Students in Malaysia have access to electronic journals only.
Using the search box
Search for a specific journal article using a combination of:
- Author name(s)
- Keywords from the article title
You can also apply the Articles filter before you search to limit your results.
Using the Journals tab
You can also find a specific article by looking for the journal title in which it was published. Use the Journals tab on NUsearch [UK, China, Malaysia] to find a journal title.
Accessing electronic journals (All students)
If a journal article is available electronically, NUsearch [UK, China, Malaysia] will show this as Available online and will link you to the full text.
If you are working off campus you may be asked to login with your University username and password.

Finding print journals (UK and China students only)
If you discover the journal article you are looking for is only available in print, NUsearch [UK, China] will tell you the:
- Library which holds the journal
- Shelf location
- Holding information - e.g. Vol 1-10, 1993-2003, "Vol 8-, 1980-
Most print journals are arranged in alphabetical order by title. Some journals may be arranged in classmark order.
Print journals are not usually transferable between libraries. To look at the journal you need, please visit the library which holds it.
Exceptions include:
For UK students only
- You can request photocopies of specific articles from print journals held in the James Cameron Gifford Library to be sent to any UK University of Nottingham library for collection
- Students based at the Sutton Bonington Campus can request photocopies of specific articles from print journals held in any UK University of Nottingham library be sent to James Cameron Gifford Library for collection
- To make these requests, use the Interlibrary Loan service (there is a small charge for requests)
Obtaining journal articles not available in the library
You can request articles not available in the library, either in print or electroniclly, through our Interlibrary loan service.
