Along with your degree, a key factor employers will look for in a graduate is any experience you can bring to the role.
In Part 3 of our guide to how we can help your career we look at ways to gain valuable work experience in your spare time while studying at Nottingham.
For information on taking a work placement as part of your course at Nottingham see Part 4: Kick-starting your career.
Work experience opportunities
Work in the UK during your course
Employers value much more than academic achievements when looking at candidates. This is just a small way you can improve your employability. Communication skills, problem-solving, team-work? Check, check and check!
– Olivia, international student from Malaysia
Working part-time during your course or in vacation periods is a great way to earn some money, gain employment experience and boost your CV.
There are numerous opportunities to find part-time and vacation work in Nottingham. Unitemps is our recruitment agency for part-time and temporary work on campus and in the local area.
International students studying at degree level with a Tier 4 student visa can usually work for up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacation periods.
Gain experience by volunteering
Volunteering at Tasty Tuesday, getting to know some people, listening to their stories and just sitting with them, is one of the things I have never expected when coming to UK.
– Puput, international student from Indonesia
Volunteering is another way to gain work experience and develop transferable skills while you study at Nottingham. It can also help you support charities and build links with the local community.
Our Students' Union's Student Volunteering Centre works with a variety of charities and community organisations to offer dozens of short-term and long-term volunteering opportunities for students.
