Description

The CST is delighted to be inviting Commandant Adrian Jacobs, Security and Governance Counsellor (attached to Government of Mali), to deliver a talk entitled 'No Afghanistan in the Sahel: an alternative perspective on stabilisation' for this next instalment of their Highlight Speaker Series.

Adrian (BA, MA, MEconSc) has specialised in the Sahel and North Africa for over 20 years, in security, commercial and latterly advisory roles. He has recently completed a role with the Malian government as part of the EU EEAS stabilisation action in central Mali. Crises in the region are exacerbated by the spread of transnational terror and criminal networks and Adrian presents perspectives on the evolving crisis management structures and instruments currently in play – by national authorities, regional organisations and other international partners.

The promise of the 2010 'Arab Spring' quickly gave way to instability across Northern and Sahelien Africa. Crises across the north but most especially in Libya fuelled instability in the adjacent Sahel and coincided with an out-reach by the islamic state. Reflecting recent experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, numerous western analyses have postulated the 'afghanisation' of the entire region. This presentation will offer an alternative perspective on the stabilisation challanges in Sahel, by challanging key assumptions which underpin conflict analyses and stabilisation strategies currently in place.

This event is free and all are welcome to attend.
