February 2023

Hi,

For the first time ever, in 2022 wind and solar energy was the EU's top electricity source. This signifies system-level changes are happening. But to meet global carbon reduction targets and limit global warming, we all need to continue to make our own sustainable changes.

This month we feature sustainable research at UoN and the chance to embed sustainable development in education. We also introduce the university's new Sustainable Travel Officer.

So let’s get going!

Things you can do now

Educators needed for the SDG Teach In

During March, link your teaching and learning to local and global concerns by incorporating the UN Sustainable Development Goal’s (SDG's).
We'd like schools in all five faculties to link relevant teaching to one or more of the UN's 17 SDGs. E.g. a lecture on asthma on the medicine course draws attention to Climate Action (SDG13) in relation to the high carbon footprint of commonly used inhalers.

All you need to do is include a slide indicating which SDG is relevant to the topic at hand.

Guest column

Hi everybody!

I'm Emma, the new Sustainable Travel Officer in the university's Sustainability Team. As a former UoN student, I'm excited to be returning as a member of staff, and as a Geography graduate, it's great to be in a role where I can positively shape the world around me.

I've spent 15 years in the UK transport planning industry, working on projects across residential and employment developments, to health and educational establishments, to retail and leisure attractions. I've specialised in developing sustainable transport strategies and in delivering and evaluating travel behaviour change projects for local authorities.

With the new Castle Meadow Campus in the City opening soon, agile working, and ambitious carbon reduction targets, it's a critical time for the university. I'm looking forward to applying my skills and experience to lead on the transport implications of these challenges. I'm keen to engage with students and staff, and work with internal and external stakeholders, e.g. Nottingham Council and public transport operators.

Although we all understand more about the environmental impacts of car use, making changes to our lifestyle can be difficult. The university has already introduced measures to enable staff and students to make more sustainable travel choices. Find out more about these here.

Mixed hedge planting on University Park

Teams from Estates and Facilities, the student Conservation Society and others helped the grounds team plant over 600 saplings to create a mixed species hedgerow on Florence Boot Field.

Incorporating 8 different native species, once established the the hedge will provide habitats and food for wildlife. Wildflower seed was sown on the mound to increase biodiversity and provide food for insects.
