Hi,

This month we welcome Hamza, the Student Union's incoming Environmental and Social Justice Officer, and announce the first winners of the Green Rewards team prize.

It's also Plastic Free July and there's still time to get involved in the Choose to Refuse Challenge and help reduce plastic pollution.

Plus read about how University office furniture is being rehomed by local charities, and the habitats of hedgehogs, both on campus and in our gardens.

So let’s get going!

GUEST COLUMN

I am Hamza, the incoming Student's Union Environmental & Social Justice (ESJ) Officer. I'm studying BSc Economics and International Economics.

Three facts about me:
  1. I love running; so much that I am a Strava Local Legend on a few routes in Nottingham
  2. Just like Descartes said, “I think therefore I am”, if you believe therefore you can
  3. I am from Pakistan, but I lived in Bahrain before coming to the UK
Over the past 2 years, I've been involved in various SU and University roles like SU Trustee, Democratic Procedures Committee, Halls Executive Committee, PASS Leader, Course Representative - rest assured, you are in safe hands.

As incoming ESJ Officer, I want to emphasize the importance of individual responsibility because, by closing our taps or switching our lights off when not in use, everyone's action can translate into collective action. We have a moral obligation to contribute to a sustainable environment because ignoring the plight of environmental challenges is a tragedy of epic proportions.

What are my plans?
  1. Environment & Sustainability Speaker Series and Town Hall Debates
  2. ESJ Network News Series/Podcast
  3. Litter Picking Volunteering Sessions
Support grass-root environmental initiatives like Waste Nott a Drop, Sustainable Menstruation for All

Hedgehogs on campus and at home

The Hedgehog Friendly Campus Group have had a great Spring, carrying out surveys and holding a hedgehog friendly garden competition.

Hedgehog habitats

On University Park during May, evidence of hedgehogs was found in four out of the ten special hedgehog tunnels that were set up. More recently at Sutton Bonington campus, hedgehog tracks were found in two of the locations surveyed.

The hedgehog friendly garden competition had some fantastic entries from UoN staff who have created habitats for hedgehogs in their gardens.

What’s next?

The group will be carrying out campus pond surveys in the coming months, to assess whether or not a hedgehog would be able to easily get out of a pond or if a ramp needs installing.

The hedgehog surveys will be repeated in August. If you’d like to help, contact Hannah Constantin.
