We took a break in August, we hope you did too and that now we’re all looking forward to the start of term. This month, read our advice for returning to campus sustainably, make your commute an active one with Cycle September or purchase a new bike at an upcoming bike sale.

We also welcome Rachel to the sustainability team and explore how you can get involved with Zero Waste Week.

So let’s get going!

GUEST COLUMN

Hi everyone!

I’m Rachel and I’m your Environmental Assistant – the newest member of the sustainability team at the University of Nottingham! I graduated from the University with a Natural Sciences degree this summer and then joined the team at the beginning of August.

I’ll be mainly helping with the running and promotion of events and campaigns to encourage students to make sustainable choices. Making ‘sustainable choices’ can feel like a minefield. I hope that we at the sustainability team can help you navigate this minefield a bit better while we try to navigate it ourselves! I also hope that we can do that alongside encouraging lobbying and campaigning for big changes.

With the arrival of new students and COP26 coming up, it’s going to be a busy term so stay tuned!

Zero Waste Week

6-10 September

Zero Waste Week is a week of encouraging incremental change to reduce our waste. Here’s some things you can do to get involved.

Have a read of our two blogs on the topic of waste this week:
  • Welcome to Zero Waste Week - Louis from the university’s waste management company, Enva, provides some tips and tricks for reducing your waste
  • Should we care about plastics? - A group of PHD students conducted a survey to find out about public awareness and behaviours around plastics and discuss their findings.
Take a waste audit using this document and find out how much you throw away in a week and how you could do better.

There a lots of waste activities to try on Green Rewards. Why not pledge to reduce your use of disposable plastic items to earn yourself 50 points per week?

Take a look at the #ZeroWasteWeek tag on social media to get inspired by the ways other people are reducing their waste.
