October 2021
Hi,
Welcome and welcome back to all new, returning students and staff.
This autumn our attention is firmly on the COP26 conference in November. We have news of how the University will be marking the event but there’ll also be a special COP edition of the newsletter later this month.
As the nights creep in, our annual Brighten Up campaign will be encouraging cyclists to be safe, be seen and keep pedalling.
So let’s get going!

Brighten Up
Our annual ‘Brighten Up’ campaign reminds you to be safe and be seen when cycling in the autumn and winter months. Don't stop cycling because it's dark, brighten up instead.
Be safe, be seen
The clocks go back on Sunday 31 October. If you are cycling in the dark make sure that you can be seen whether you are on campus, on public roads or on cycle paths.
To avoid a fine of up to £150, make sure that between the hours of sunset and sunrise you have:
- Lights on the front and back of your bike
- A rear reflector
- Reflectors on your pedals
To find out more about what is required by law, watch this video.
Keep pedalling
This also applies on campus. You will be fined if you are found to be cycling on campus without the correct lights. If you need lights for your bike, you can pick up a set of front and back lights from the SU shop.
Win prizes
We also recommend that you wear a reflective jacket and put a reflective cover over your rucksack to make yourself safer. Enter our competition on Instagram for the chance to win a Provis reflective jacket and other goodies!
