How to apply in Clearing

If you haven't already got an offer from a university, you can apply for a place on an undergraduate course through our Clearing hotline. Call us on 0330 041 5590 (9am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday).

We welcome Clearing applications from all qualified applicants – whether you've applied to us previously, changed your study plans after receiving results, or you're applying to universities for the first time. Follow our simple step-by-step guide to make your Clearing application.

This guidance and our Clearing hotline is for UK students and any students assessed as 'home' for fees purposes. If you are an international student, please see our international Clearing guide for the correct guidance and contact details.

Are you currently holding a conditional offer from us? We'll update your offer once we receive your results (via UCAS or from you, depending on what exams you have taken). In some cases we may still be able to accept students who have narrowly missed the grades stated in your offer conditions, so please wait for us to assess your results and update your offer. Your step-by-step Clearing guide

If you have applied via UCAS and are not holding a place, your status in UCAS Hub will say 'You are in Clearing' or 'Clearing has started'. Stay calm and follow these simple steps:

Check our Clearing vacancies for any courses that interest you. Click on the course listings for full details, including entry requirements, modules and fees.

2. Check our entry requirements

A level and International Baccalaureate Diploma requirements for each course are listed in the course pages. We have updated these requirements for home students in Clearing and they may differ slightly from our standard requirements.

Our minimum English language requirements are grade 4 or C at GCSE English language (or equivalent) but some courses need a higher grade so please check the requirements for your course.

3. Get ready to contact us

Once you have found a course that interests you, and you meet the requirements, get everything ready to make your application to Nottingham. We can only make unconditional offers during Clearing so you must have received your final exam results before applying.

You will need:

  • your UCAS number
  • full details of your qualifications and exam results
  • the course title and course code of the course that you want to apply for

You can only make one application at a time. Each course has a limited number of places available and due to the high numbers of applications we receive, our courses sometimes fill up quickly. We cannot guarantee that a place will be available on your chosen course, even if this was showing as available on our website when you applied.

 
4. Get in touch

Call our Clearing hotine on 0330 041 5590 to make your Clearing application.

This hotline is only available for 'home' fee status students. If you are an international student, please see our international Clearing guide for the international application process and contact details.

The hotline is typically open 9am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday. During the UCAS results embargo period from 12 August to 17 August we will be unable to take any new Clearing applications but the hotline will still be available to handle enquiries and provide Clearing advice.

During A level results week, our Clearing hotline will be open at the following times:

  • Thursday 18 August: 8.15am–6pm
  • Friday 19 August: 9am–5pm
  • Saturday 20 August: 9am–1pm

From Monday 22 August, we will resume normal hotline times of 9am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday, until the end of August.

After you have made an application by phone, you should receive a confirmation email within approximately 15 minutes, confirming your details and that we are handling your Clearing application. If you don't receive this email, please check your junk or spam folder and call us on 0330 041 5590 to check that we have the correct email address recorded.

As well as the hotline, we will also provide an online application form, available from 18 August.

We will contact you by email after assessing your application – although we may also contact you by phone if we require any further information. We cannot give an exact timeframe of how quickly you will receive an update from us, but we try to make a decision as quickly as possible. Applications are considered in the order they are received.

It may be the case that your chosen course becomes full before we've been able to assess your application. If this happens, we will contact you and you may be able to apply for another course still open in Clearing.

Decisions will be communicated via email so please make sure to check your junk and spam folders.

Accepting your offer

If we make you an offer through Clearing, you will have a deadline to accept this offer (as outlined in your offer email) and you must refer yourself to the University of Nottingham (Institution Code N84) in UCAS.
