Professor Andy Long FREng is Deputy Vice-Chancellor and a member of University Executive Board. Prior to his appointment as DVC he was Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Engineering, served as Executive Dean (2011-15) and Associate Dean for Research (2008-11) in Engineering. He has a BSc in Applied Mathematics from Warwick, an MSc in Computer Integrated Engineering from Loughborough, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham. He joined the staff at Nottingham in 1990 as a Research Assistant, was appointed lecturer in 1994 and gained promotion to a personal chair in Mechanics of Materials in 2003. Over the years he has taught numerical techniques and polymer engineering to undergraduate students, and has supervised 30 successful PhD students. His research is on composite materials and has been supported by numerous research awards from research councils, UK government and industry. Until recently he was Director of the EPSRC Future Composites Manufacturing Research Hub.
Andy was a member of the Composites Leadership Forum, responsible to BEIS for the UK Composites Strategy, and a non-executive director of Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) Ltd. He is chair of the Executive Management Group for Midlands Innovation, a partnership between Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Loughborough, Leicester, Nottingham and Warwick universities.
