Carbon: The everywhere element

Carbon is a fantastically important element. We’re all made of carbon and there are probably far more different types of molecule that contain carbon than any other element. There are so many carbon compounds because carbon forms chains so easily, sometimes millions of atoms long. Most of the molecules we use for plastics, pharmaceutical products, our food, are carbon-based compounds.
