Energy efficiency: hospitals
What strategies can hospitals adopt to reduce their impact on the local and global environment? How might they reduce the carbon footprint of vehicles transporting patients, visitors and goods? This album visits three hospitals which have adopted green approaches to energy efficiency, by cutting electricity consumption, reducing traffic volume, and even generating their own renewable energy. This material forms part of The Open University course T206 Energy for a sustainable future.Author(s):

2.2 Memory You should now be beginning to build up a picture of what a computer is: you know it needs input and output devices to communicate with the world outside and a processor to carry out the instructions that are programmed into it. But where are these instructions stored within the computer? The answer is that they are stored within what is called the computer's main memory, along with any data needed to carry them out. However, the main memory in computers like PCs is much too smal

Some studies have shown that a higher selenium level is linked to a lower risk of breast, prostate and colon cancer, which may in part be due to selenium's antioxidant function. Other selenium-containing proteins help to regulate thyroid function and play a role in the immune system Acknowledgements The content acknowledged below is Proprietary (see terms and conditions) and is used under licence. This content is made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 Licence Grateful acknowledgement is made to the following sources for permission Math Magic Using a Book Keep on learning   There are more than 800 courses on OpenLearn for you to choose from on a range of subjects. Find out more 3.4.1 Try some yourself 1 A new train operator boasts ‘Train times reduced by 12%’. Pain can be reduced if the formation of prostaglandin can be inhibited. Prostaglandin is formed, from arachidonic acid, in a cavity in the active site of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX). Geometrical isomerism can b 1.3 Parallel and perpendicular lines We often wish to know whether two lines are parallel (that is, they never meet) or perpendicular (that is, they meet at right angles). Two distinct lines, y = m1x + c1 and y = m2x + c2, are parallel if and only if they have the same gradient; that is, if and only if m1 = m2. For example, the lines y = −2x + 7 and 5.1.2 In what context was the text published? This amounts to asking, when was it written and for what audience. Academic texts are written to make a contribution to the debates going on within the field. To understand where an author is coming from and why arguments are being presented in a particular way, you need to be able to place the text in context. Layard's article was published in 2003 in the UK, and was drawn from a prestigious series of public lectures. So the context is a major statement by a prominent academic The Raven as Featured in The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror 1.3 Square roots Given any number, you now know how to find its square.
