OPSE 410: Biophotonics
An introduction to the interaction of light with biological tissues. Biophotonics for diagnostic and therapeutic applications will be discussed. Topics include propagation of light in turbid tissues, absorption, scattering, laser surgery, and optical rotation.
4.2 What pressures for change were exerted? The emphasis is very much on the impetus individuals gave to change. Jim Nickson in particular seems to have been a man with energy and vision. The parents set up their own services where they were missing – a holiday chalet, swimming sessions, a club where young people could meet, above all the long-established Welfare Visitor Scheme. They campaigned for services in the community as an alternative to hospital admission. A strong theme is that work they started was often taken up by the loc
Where U.S. Politics Came From
John Green discussed where American politicians come from. In the beginning, soon after the U.S. Constitution was adopted, politics were pretty non-existent. George Washington was elected president with no opposition, everything was new and exciting, and everyone just got along. For several months, anyway. (13:57)
3.2 Surface mining Many environmental issues arise when surface mining is considered, and such mines regularly arouse local opposition. By their very nature, surface mines have a major impact on the landscape, involving the digging of enormous pits with accompanying noise, dust and traffic movements, and destruction of mature landscape. Increasingly, in recent years the environmentally conscious public has used the planning processes to oppose and sometimes prevent mining on sites where the environmental impact
4.3 Physical grounds for thinking we are immortal In section III Hume discusses what he calls physical reasons for thinking there is an afterlife. A sensible guess as to what he means by a physical reason is that it is one based on observation and experience of the physical world. He begins by asserting that physical reasons are the ones he has most respect for. (This assertion is unsurprising: his objections to moral reasons, and the metaphysical reasons we skipped, turn on the allegation that they depend on claims that go beyond wha
2 Creationism in disguise In recent years, creationists have re-branded their hypothesis as 'intelligent design', which asserts that the apparently designed fit of organisms to their conditions of life necessarily implies the existence of an intelligent designer. This idea is no more than the old 'argument from design', promulgated most famously by William Paley in his fable of chancing upon a watch and inferring a watchmaker, which the theory of evolution by natural selection refutes, as brilliantly explained by Rich

Ocean Acidification Symposium - The metal isotope toolbox: a case study in the Southern Ocean
The Ocean Acidification Symposium was presented by the Centre for Chemical and Physical Oceanography, in November of 2012. The day-long symposium featured brief presentations from a wide range of researchers, of which this is one: Dr Melanie Gault-Ringold explores the role of bioactive metals in the lives of southern Ocean phytoplankton. This talk looks at the role of cadmium and other metals, and how southern ocean phytoplankton differ form their northern cousins
Genesis Chapter 46 - New International Version of the Bible
This video contains a high quality narration of The Book of Genesis, Chapter 46, from the New International Version of the Bible. Scriptures read by professional voice actors, along with good music and sound effects. No moving images.
3.2 Post-audio exercises Let u and v be the position vectors (6, 8) and (−12, 5), respectively. (a) Sketch u and v on a single diagram. On the same diagram, sket Conclusion Ecology is the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment (including other organisms). An understanding of ecology is important to inform environmental decision-making. Soil pH influences the availability of mineral nutrients to plants and hence the distribution of different plant species. Some species may be classified as either calcicoles or calcifuges. Variation in salinity, exposure to desiccation and biotic interactions (e.g. grazing) influence the zona 3-point bending under a circular polariscope of annealed polycarbonate bar with a notch Towards Evidence-based Practice in Science Education (EPSE) - an ESRC funded Teaching and Learning R 3.2.1 Try some yourself You are planning to paint three rooms with total wall areas of 56, 38 and 40 square metres, using paint that comes in tins which claim to cover 15 square metres per tin. Over the last three decades major events, scandals and regulations have shocked the pension system. Have the public lost faith in occupational and private pensions? Should the state pension be enough to see us through our old age? And with the non-working to working ratio continuing to rapidly increase, who will pay? We hear from those that were directly affected by the scandals of the 90's and the collapse in private pensions since - and from the experts whose job it is to help us make provisi
