Formalisms for an Annotation-based Training Memory: Connecting Implicit and Explicit Semantics
This article aims at presenting the formalisms we defined for annotation-based training memories within the MICA project. It elaborates the objectives of the project and the requirements these objectives put on the tool to be implemented. A study of the literature is used to establish our formalism. Based on ontologies, they structure the annotation object and adapt the Alexander design pattern to annotation action.

6.4 Second Essay

As a preliminary to the Second Essay, Owen says that he will enhance further his discussion of his underlying principles and then begin to explain to his readers how they can be applied in practice. Notice too the prologue for the Second Essay (p. 113) , quoting Vansittart's view that ‘if we cannot reconcile, all opinions, let us endeavour to unite all hearts’, a ringing phrase often quoted by Owen in later publications and widely adopted as one of the most popular Owenite homilies

Blow-and-Go Parachute
Students make a skydiver and parachute contraption to demonstrate how drag caused by air resistance slows the descent of skydivers as they travel back to Earth. Gravity pulls the skydiver toward the Earth, while the air trapped by the parachute provides an upward resisting force (drag) on the skydiver.

Perching Parrot
Students explore the concepts of center of mass and static equilibrium by seeing how non-symmetrical objects balance. Using a paper cut-out shape of a parrot sitting on a wire coat hanger, they learn that their parrot exists in stable equilibrium — it returns to its balancing point after being disturbed. The weight of its tail makes the parrot balance upright. Give the parrot a push, and she knocks off balance, but swings back and forth until coming to rest in balance again.

An Open Economy - the Progressive Response to Global Change
Britain has long realised the best way to progress is to look outward rather than retreat inwards. In previous centuries, progressives responded to great social and economic change by moving to create an open society. In this lecture, Business and Enterprise Secretary, John Hutton will argue that the right progressive response to the scale and pace of global change facing Britain this century is to break down the remaining barriers that can hold people back by creating a truly open economy.

Religious Faith and Human Rights
The idea of human rights is often traced back to the characteristically religious insight that every individual is unique in the eyes of God. This explanation of why human dignity is important held sway for centuries, but it has lost much of its grip on society in these uncertain, post-modern times. Many adherents of human rights today see no need to root their beliefs in any religious (or specifically Christian) set of beliefs. Indeed some would go so far as to see religion as distinctly hostil

Studying Islam across times and place: how to compare?
We discuss `Studying Islam across times and place: how to compare?' and this time we subject 'Islam' to an analytical discussion. The anthropological approach advocated here focuses on processes by which Muslims refer back to an Islamic tradition, and employ those references to explain and change the social world. Current debates in Aceh (Indonesia) about how to understand sharî`a provide an initial case study; these debates are then shown to be quite similar to some underway in Western Europe.
