Area of a triangle (Coordinate Geometry)
An interactive applet and associated web page that calculate the area of a triangle using the formula method in coordinate geometry. The applet has a triangle with draggable vertices. As you drag them the triangle's area is recalculated from the vertex coordinates using the formula. The grid and coordinates can be turned on and off. The area calculation can be turned off to permit class exercises and then turned back on the verify the answers. The applet can be printed as it appears on the scree

Seasonal Migrations: Whooping Cranes
Children follow the migrations of animals. They observe, research, and report their findings, and watch journeys progress on real-time maps. Through these interrelated investigations, students discover that sunlight drives all living systems and they learn about the dynamic ecosystem that surrounds and connects them. Fall: Students watch chicks grow and then "join" the migration as humans teach the birds a new route using an ultra-light plane to lead the way. Daily updates: September-December. S

Don't Crack Humpty
Student groups are provided with a generic car base. The groups then design a device/enclosure that will protect an egg on or in the car as it is rolled down a ramp at increasing slopes. Students will be expected to perform basic mathematical calculations using their data.

Blow-and-Go Parachute
Students make a skydiver and parachute contraption to demonstrate how drag caused by air resistance slows the descent of skydivers as they travel back to Earth. Gravity pulls the skydiver toward the Earth, while the air trapped by the parachute provides an upward resisting force (drag) on the skydiver.

2.2.12 Activity: living through change
This unit looks at the history of institutions in the twentieth century, starting with a case study of Lennox Castle Hospital. It tries to make sense of the history of Lennox Castle, and of institutional life in general, through testimony of those who experienced institutions as inmates and as nurses, as well as through Erving Goffman's medel of the 'total institution'. It examines the social bases of segragation, the professionalisation of staff in asylums and institutions, and campaigns for ch

Perpendicular lines. (Coordinate Geometry)
An interactive applet and associated web page that show how to determine of one line is perpendicular to another in coordinate geometry. The principle used is that if two lines a re perpendicular to each other the slope of one is the negative reciprocal of the other. The applet shows to lines that the user can move. The slopes are continuously calculated as you drag them, and if the they are parallel they change color. The calculation is shown on screen updated continuously as you drag. The grid
