5.5.2 Mimetic pressures

Mimetic pressures come from the pressure to imitate what others do. The world is complicated and finding the optimal solution often difficult. One way of dealing with this complexity is to copy others. For example, in my own consulting work I carried out an assignment for British Petroleum (BP). Subsequently, other (smaller) clients would often ask me ‘So how does BP do this?’, usually with little regard for the different circumstances they faced. It is this mimetic pressure that

6.5 The social construction of quantifiable risk

Earlier in this course we referred to the way in which social groups can develop shared cognitive schema. One important role for shared cognitive schema is to define the risks that we pay attention to, the dread in which we hold them and the perceived likelihood of their occurrence. Because these perceptions affect behaviour, they also play a role in selecting the risks that we face. In the last half century, some sociologists suggest (e.g. Beck, 1992; Giddens, 1990) that our concerns with ri

4.1 CEG programmes

My favourite teacher was a PE teacher we called JJ. We got on well. He was a cool guy. He was a teacher I could talk to without any problems. He would sit me down sometimes and try to sort me out. A lot of the teachers I didn't get along with. I wasn't very big on school. It has improved now, I believe, but when I was there they taught you to try to pass exams, they didn't tell you much about life.

Introduction

This key skill is about helping you understand how you learn; think about how you can improve your own learning and performance, and consider how you might generalise the principles and processes for future learning.

Improving your learning and performance could be considered to be a ‘meta-skill’, that is the skill of learning how to learn. This unit, then, is a little different from the other skills units because improving your own learning and performance is not a separate option

4 Conclusion

Finally, a few key messages to take from this course. One is that there is no great mystery about what good writing is. We can recognize it just by reading it. The difficulty is how to produce it. However, since there are different aspects of writing well, you will find it useful to return to the ‘Criteria of good essay writ

Lawrence Bailey - Market Research Valedictory Lecture
Colleagues from both academia and business were present on 27 January 2011 for Lawrence Bailey's guest lecture on Market Segmentation, Qualitative Research and Conversations Across the Garden Wall. The garden wall of the lecture's title was Lawrence's metaphor for the potential divide between the two sectors. The lecture reflected Lawrence's career-long wish to get qualitative researchers in the commercial world to talk to their counterparts in the academic world, and vice versa. He discusse

1 Language as knowledge, language as educational medium

In a course like this, in which we are concerned with the teaching and learning of a language, we have the difficult task of simultaneously maintaining two conceptions of ‘language’. The first is as the subject matter of teaching and learning: the nature of the language which is being taught, the ways in which this language is defined by the curriculum of schools, and the ways it is used in the world which learners in teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) classes are

1.6.4 Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)

Vitamin B6 is composed of pyridoxine and two closely related compounds. It is found in small quantities in many foods, though it can be destroyed in the cooking process. No clear deficiency disease has been recognised in humans as being directly caused by lack of this vitamin, since it is often found in conjunction with other B vitamins and their absence has greater effects. Its main role is in the conversion of some amino acids into other ones, depending on the requirements of the
