Design of an eLearning System for Accreditation of
Non-formal Learning
This paper deals with issues related to the non-formal learning in vocational
education, and the role of ICT for providing appropriate accreditation model in such
education. The presented conclusions are based on the Leonardo da Vinci project
LeoSPAN. The paper emphasises on the development of a model and a prototype
of an adaptive eLearning system that ensures the pre-defined learner outcomes.
One of the advantages of the eLearning system is the flexibility for people who

Making online-courses more learner centred, more learner drivenand more social
This contribution focuses the question if is it possible at all to follow eLearning 2.0 paradigm using a state of the art learning management system or do we have to replace well established tools in order to advance eLearning. How can teachers develop their online courses regarding to eLearning 2.0 perceptions? During the last years the author tried to enhance her online courses to make them more learner centred, learner driven and social. Her substantial experiences are summarized.
What Research Has to Say About Gender-Linked Differences in CMC and Does Elementary School ChildrenÂ
This paper first reviews the literature on computer mediated communication (CMC) to examine whether claims about gender-linked differences in specific attitudes, styles and content in CMC have been validated. Empirical studies were limited, with considerable variation in audiences, tasks, and contexts that was related to varied outcomes. The paper next describes an empirical study on the e-mail communication of elementary school children from ten Dutch classrooms. No gender-linked preference for
An examination of two types of timeline, linear vs. staggered: a mixed method approach
This study conducted as follow-up study to evaluate effects of two different time-based interfaces, linear and staggered. This study also tries to reveal usersÂ’ preferences when they look for information in two different computer-based timeline. Explanatory mixed method design was implemented. In the first part, quantitative, there were 42 subjects. Results shows no significant difference between two types of computer-based time-line in terms of task completion time and answer accuracy. In the
On-line learning networks: Framework and scenarios
The idea of using the internet as a platform to mediate social interactions and learning at different levels has progressively affirming itself, and this has given rise to a huge number of spontaneous and planned collectives, which are often described as on-line learning networks. On-line learning networks create value through the combination of content and people's knowledge. They can vary widely in the strength and permanence of their connections and the resources necessary to maintain them. A
Computational Mathetics: Towards a Science of Learning Systems Design
The aim of this report is simply to help put the design of computer-based systems to support learning on a more scientific footing. The aim is simply stated, but its achievement is more difficult. For one thing, it is not at all obvious what "more scientific" means in this context. However, it is essential for AI-ED research to take better account of the concepts of 'situation', 'context', 'community', 'discourse', 'social learning', and so on, but these terms need to be defined, not used as man
A micoworld to implant a germ of probability
This paper reports on the third part of a long term experiment concerning the introduction of 12-13 years old pupils to the concept of randomness and probability. In the first parts, the pupils analysed the concept of randomness, in daily life and with LEGO-RCX robots. The third part is based on the Random Garden Game (within the programming environment ToonTalk). The pupils are guided towards the concepts of equivalence of sample spaces and of classical probability, through temporary and person
Combining qualitative evaluation and social network analysis for the study of classroom social inter
Studying and evaluating real experiences that promote active and collaborative learning is a crucial field in CSCL. Major issues that remain unsolved deal with the merging of qualitative and quantitative methods and data, especially in educational settings that involve both physical and computer-supported collaboration.
In this paper we present a mixed evaluation method that combines traditional sources of data with computer logs, and integrates quantitative statistics, qualitative data analysis
Music Composition Lessons: the multimodal affordances of technology
This article seeks to investigate the multimodal affordances presented by music
software and how it can provide new opportunities for students to engage with
composition work in the classroom. It aims to broaden the scope of current research into classroom composition using technology, through a study of students' environments and compositional processes as seen from these new perspectives. The authors believe there is a now a need for a reconsideration of the scope of multimodal enquiry in the

Proceedings of 1st Workshop on Narrative and Learning
Environments
This two-day workshop, organized for the partners of the network by the Special Interest Group “Narrative and Learning Environments†(SIG NLE) of Kaleidoscope, aimed to bring together scholars and scientists from different disciplines, to discuss, deepen and develop research and applications in the relatively new area of Narrative Learning Environments (NLEs). The contributions presented by the participants well reflect the variety of possible uses of narrative in education, where this term
Choosing for learning objects: The possible deployment of learning objects with eight educational am
The Dutch six-part series Leerobjecten in de praktijk (Learning objects in practice) is about six divergent and difficult problems that occur frequently in working with learning objects. Based on research into existing practice, guidelines are offered to policy makers, educational technology consultants, teachers, educational designers and developers of digital learning materials who are struggling with these problems in higher education.
Choosing for learning objects discusses eight education
Interactive learning of nanophysics phenomena
This paper describes a new method of teaching and experimenting nanophysics effects using a nanomnipulator. This nano-manipulator is formed by a multi-sensory platform connected to an AFM and/or to virtual nano-scenes produced by a real-time simulator. The first objective of this work is the evaluation of a custom-made nanomanipulator compared to the use of a classical Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) interface. These instruments are used to teach one-dimensional nano-physical phenomenon, the appro
Using Perspective in Narrative Learning Environments
Several empathic applications have been developed over the last years but
can we redirect that empathy to specific characters? This paper focuses on the intention
to induce empathy in children and stimulate role taking by presenting a narrative
through the perspective of a specific character. The use of perspective is achieved by
showing the events that happen in the story but without impartiality.
We will describe a narrative-based application designed to help children cope
with bullying situat
