2.9 Iron (Fe)

The ability of blood to carry oxygen is due to the presence of the red pigment, haemoglobin, present in red blood cells. Haemoglobin is a protein formed from four polypeptide chains called globins, in the centre of each of which is a small non-protein part called a haem group (haima is Greek for ‘blood’). Each of the haem groups has an iron atom within it (Author(s): The Open University

Scales
This is one of the most basic starting points of music. The individual note or tone is played and explained.  Tone is a sound that occurs at a specific frequency.  Notes are the individual keys on the piano; there is a group of two black notes and a group of three black notes.  Scales are the combinations of whole and half steps. There are major and minor scales.

Between the Lions: "Chicken Jane & the Aardvark"

Here's another heroic adventure sequence from "Between the Lions" -- the story of how Chicken Jane saved Scot and Dot from a hard-charging aardvark pulling a cart containing a huge marshmallow. Video is short, but is helpful to kids who are trying to master the “ar” sound.  Some words are printed on the screen.  This video is of good quality and would be good for early readers to help with word recognition.

An Evaluation of Neural Spatial Interaction Models Based on a Practical Application
One of the serious problems faced by the Brazilian municipalities is the scarcity of resources for building education infrastructure. This asks for an optimal allocation of the available resources that includes, among other things, a rational spatial arrangement of the supply points (i.e., schools) in order to increase the demand coverage (i.e., students). If it is possible to foresee the regions where the demand is going to be concentrated, it is then possible to plan the location of new

Dispositivos esc?picos para a media??o do olhar
This work will discuss how the contemporary technological devices, that act like mediators of the gaze, can leverage a global voyeurism in an already established scopophilic and surveillance-panopticism culture. This analysis will be done from a perspective within the art and technology, where productions in contemporary visual arts resort to this state of affairs to propose their poetics and to present a critical and reflective reading about a society, facing a reality where privacy and individ

The representation of type in grammatical design
Grammatical design is useful for the generation of a set of related designs. The concept of type aids designers in generating designs with a specified structure. However, existing studies in grammar are ambiguous in their definition of type in the language of designs generated by a grammar. Extending our previous study of defining style in grammar, this paper provides a formal definition of the concept of type in the language of designs generated by a grammar. This is done with the help of a des

Towards Changeability
Many buildings around the world have undergone successive changes over their life cycles. Regardless of the type or size of a building there are usually requirements for change due to several unanticipated forces and emerging uncertainties that act upon them. These changes might be in the building?s spatial, structural or service systems. This can be due to changes in the needs of occupants, the market demand or technological advances. Although buildings undergo change, current design practice d

Beyond Y2k: A Look at Acadia's Present and Future
The sky may not be falling, but it sure is getting closer. Where will you when the last three zeros of our millennial odometer click into place? Computer scientists tell us that Y2K will bring the world?s computer infrastructure to its knees. Maybe, maybe not. But it is interesting that Y2K is an issue at all. Speculating on the future is simultaneously a magnifying glass for examining our technologies and a looking glass for what we become through them. "The future" is nothing new. Orwell's vis

The Pattern That Connects
While patterns have a spotty history in architecture, their definitions and uses in other fields offer new possibilities for design. This paper examines those definitions and uses?including theories put forward by architectural theorist, Christopher Alexander; art educator, Gyorgy Kepes; chemist, Ilya Prigogine; and anthropologist, Gregory Bateson. Of particular interest is the shift from eternal, essential, universal, and fundamental patterns to fleeting, superficial, specific, and incidental v
