1.1 Music and technology

Music technology in one guise or another is part of everybody's life, because music is a part of almost everybody's life. For instance, if you are an instrumental performer of music, professional or not, then your instrument, be it the harp or the rock'n'roll drums, will be the result of considerable technological expertise on the part of the instrument maker. On the other hand, if you are not a performer but like to listen to music, the chances are that most of your listening is done via a h

Sander Gilman: Cosmopolitanism and the Jews
The newest buzzword for globalization is cosmopolitanism. As with many such reuses of older concepts, cosmopolitanism has a complex history, specifically in the German-speaking lands. It is this history and its relationship to the history of German Jewry from the Enlightenment to the Holocaust that will be examined — in a global and perhaps even cosmopolitan manner. (This paper was given on 2 October 2013 at the German Historical Institute London.)

2.2 Defining the complex number system

In complex analysis we are concerned with functions whose domains and codomains are subsets of the set of complex numbers. As you probably know, this structure is obtained from the set R × R by defining suitable operations of addition and multiplication. This reveals immediately one important difference between real analysis and complex analysis: in real analysis we are concerned with sets of real numbers, in complex analysis we are concerned with sets of ordered pairs

3.4.6 Soil salinization

The change from annual flooding by a river to perennial irrigation that can be provided from a reservoir can cause soil salinization, if salts normally present in the river water accumulate in the soil as the water evaporates. These salts were previously washed away by the flooding, but the reduced supply of water by irrigation leaves them in the soil. The water is taken in by plants, or evaporated by the sun, leaving the salts behind. This causes a decline in crop yields until eventually the
