4.2 Levels of explanation

The distinction between the natural and the social is not the only significant one. Even the social orientation in constructions of social problems is complicated by different sorts of emphasis. The growth of social science since the late nineteenth century has ensured that a variety of competing theories, disciplines and perspectives are available to us in our attempt to make sense of social problems. Such theories have made their way into the realm of everyday or common-sense constructions

Introduction

A number of biological changes may occur as a result of eutrophication. Some of these are direct (e.g. stimulation of algal growth in water bodies), while others are indirect (e.g. changes in fish community composition due to reduced oxygen concentrations). This section summarizes some of the typical changes observed in aquatic, marine and terrestrial ecosystems following eutrophication.

Some typical changes observed in lakes following artificial eutrophication are summarized in Table 2

Introduction

Strategy is based on the unique relationship between an organisation's distinctive resources and capabilities and its environment. This relationship is defined as ‘strategic fit’ and is seen as a dynamic relationship where the organisation does not merely respond to its environment but seeks to shape it.

Organisations do not exist in a vacuum: they rely on and reflect the political, economic and social contexts within which they operate. These will include:

2.6 Representing true/false quantities

Sometimes a quantity that is to be represented in a computer has only two possible values, either true or false. An example of such a true/false quantity in the kitchen scales is the one that represents whether the scales are to weigh in metric or in imperial measure. The value of this true/false quantity is given by the true/false response to the statement ‘the most recent push of the input button made the measuring system metric’.

2.7 How to reference sources

You have seen how easy it is to find what what you want on the Web. When you quote any information or use any images that you have not written or created yourself it is important to ensure that you reference the source of the quote or image. This is to show that you are not trying to pass off someone else's work as your own, and to enable your reader, should they wish, to access the source of that quote.
