Se trata de una asignatura fundamental. Se exponen los conceptos básicos relativos a la conmutación en redes, tanto conmutación de paquetes como conmutación de circuitos. En especial, en la sección de conmutación de paquetes, se estudian en profundidad las redes Ethernet, que serán utilizadas en varias asignaturas posteriores.
Dotar al alumno de las herramientas del cálculo diferencial y el álgebra, básicas en la formación de un arquitecto, para que éste pueda abordar con éxito otras materias de su titulación.
