5.2 The social construction of reality What do we mean when we say reality is socially constructed? We inhabit a social world. Many of the ‘facts’ of our lives which we take for granted are ‘facts’ only in so far as we hold common mental models about them: for example, common understandings of money, contracts, marriage, the rules of the road, democracy, to name just a few. To understand the nature of social influences on decision making we need to start from this idea that the environment within which we exist and the mea
1.3: A statistical interlude—averages
Aims
The main aim of this section is to discuss several ways of finding averages and to introduce you to the statistical facilities of your calculator. A single number which is typical or representative of a collection (or batch - statistical term for a set of collected data.) of numbers is commonly referred to as an average. There are several different ways of defining such a number. Two are discussed briefly in Author(s):
What Makes Something "Kafkaesque"?
The term Kafkaesque has entered the vernacular to describe unnecessarily complicated and frustrating experiences, especially with bureaucracy. But does standing in a long line to fill out confusing paperwork really capture the richness of Kafka’s vision? Beyond the word’s casual use, what makes something "Kafkaesque"? Noah Tavlin explains. Lesson by Noah Tavlin, animation by TED-Ed. (05:03)
Professor Chris Brace inaugural lecture: The future of automotive propulsion
In his inaugural lecture, Deputy Director of the PVRC in the University's Department of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Chris Brace discusses what the future holds for automotive propulsion.
During the 20th century the growth of affordable personal mobility changed the way we live and work. Today the passenger car as we know it is under increasing pressure from changing expectations, including air quality, safety, sustainability and CO2. In addition, driver needs and expectations are changi
5.1 Relativising the Holocaust? Relativising the Holocaust has been one of the classic techniques of some of those engaged in Holocaust denial; they have sought to minimise Nazi atrocities by listing them alongside the British concentration camps of the Boer War, the terror bombing of German cities during World War II and, perhaps most effectively, the purges and Gulags of the Soviet Union under Stalin. When, during the 1980s, the eminent German historian Ernst Nolte suggested that the Third Reich was a symbiotic product of

3.1 Charge-coupled device (CCD) detectors The first digital imagers to be developed were called charge-coupled devices, because of the way in which accumulated charges are passed along rows in order to read the contents of each element of an array. A CCD array has at each pixel an MOS photocapacitor. Potential on a gate electrode holds the accumulating, photo-generated charges in place during the exposure interval. The first thing to appreciate is that the photons that generate the electron–hole pairs have to penetrate the po
Napoleon and Russia
Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion of Russia in 1812 is the centerpiece of this six-minute video and deals with its cause and effect. Napoleon Bonaparte had raised the largest army that Europe had ever witnessed and wielded it to conquer much of the European landmass. In 1812, Napoleon's army marched swiftly through Russia,
but couldn't live off the land due to the Russian army's scorched-earth tactics. Eventually, the French reached Moscow, furious to find it deserted and burned to the g
3.7.4 Explaining You need to be able to think of things from your reader's point of view. The reader cannot see into your mind so you have to explain your points quite fully and carefully. You need to give examples to illustrate what you are talking about and to justify what you say. In other words, you need a sense of your ‘audience’ and you have to work out how to ‘speak’ to these readers in the right ‘tone of voice’.
4.1 Intellectual, governmental and monarchical responses There was much sympathy among intellectuals abroad for the Revolution, which seemed to be putting so many Enlightenment ideals into practice. The German philosopher Immanuel Kant was among the first to hail the Revolution as a unique historical phenomenon, and these early reactions were shared by Fichte, Herder, Schiller and Goethe. Enthusiasts in Britain included the radical Thomas Paine, author of The Rights of Man (1791), Mary Wollstonecraft, author of A Vindication of the Rights
Who Killed Martin Luther King, Jr.? Part 5
This is Part 5 of a documentary about the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. by Michel Parbot. Suitable for middle school students and older. Former FBI agent and Ray himself are interviewed and perpetuate a conspiracy theory. (Amateur-ish video that still gets across much information to the viewer.) (06:25)
2.1 Europe as a geographical area From a British point of view, judging from frequently heard expressions, Europe is something ‘out there’ (or perhaps, in the sense of EU- or Brussels-inspired regulation, ‘up there’). ‘Britain’ and ‘Europe’ are generally understood to be distinct entities rather than overlapping categories. When they ‘go to Europe’ most British people leave Britain behind – at least in the physical sense. In conventional geographical terms the situation is rather different. Europe is gen
Semantic Zoom | Introducing Windows 8 Semantic zoom is a control used by apps in Windows 8 for displaying large sets of content in a truly user friendly format. Semantic Zoom is unique in that it provides an easy to navigate, touch optimized view of the data you present to users. In designing Windows 8 we wanted to ensure users wouldn't have to pan tediously through large sets of content with touch. Semantic Zoom is our solution to this problem; it gives users the capability to jump quickly to sections&n

1.4 Three characteristic difficulties in discussions of representation I have hinted that accounting for the nature of representation – whether it be the meaning of utterances or the content of our mental states – is not easy. There are several reasons for this, and it is as well to take note of some of them from the outset. One is that there seem to be several different senses of ‘meaning’, ‘represents’ and related terms like ‘stands for’, ‘being about’, ‘expresses’ – differences that have been glossed over here but will need to

Professor Guy Standing inaugural lecture: Work after globalisation
According to the experts globalisation ended in 2008, but where does that leave us? Is the financial crisis a turning point in the global transformation?
Professor Guy Standing examines these issues in his inaugural lecture.
3.2 Congruence
Number systems and the rules for combining numbers can be daunting. This unit will help you to understand the detail of rational and real numbers, complex numbers and integers. You will also be introduced to modular arithmetic and the concept of a relation between elements of a set.
