1.4.10 Unfinished business

When people die suddenly we can never be sure that they have done and said what they want and are able to do. Meg’s long term-illness gave her a lot of time for reflection and preparation, so that while her death was sudden and she was unable to see her younger son, she also had the opportunity for conversations with people about her death. However, there may have been last-minute wishes that Meg was unable to express.

Li’s sudden stroke may have left her with things unsaid, but her

The Biological Mysteries of Kimchi (Mandarin)
Kimchi is a spicy pickled cabbage dish eaten in Korea and China. Using Kimchi as a teaching vehicle, this lesson is about how plants absorb and lose water. The lesson has three main learning/teaching goals. The first main learning goal is to understand that plants absorb and lose water through cells. The second is to learn how to observe the plasmolysis of plants. The third one is to understand the principle of osmosis in plant cells. As a prerequisite to this lesson, students should know about

7.6 Arithmetic with binary fractions

My final point in the preceding section brings home the fact that integer arithmetic is not really suitable when divisions are to be performed. It is also not suitable where some or all of the values involved in the arithmetic are not – or are not necessarily – integers, and this is often the case. In such cases, arithmetic has to be performed on non-integers.

The most common representation for non-integers is the floating-point representation that I mentioned briefly in Box 3. You

5.1 Food preservation and the development of refrigeration

Most societies have had traditional methods of preserving food: drying, baking, pickling, salting, smoking, the use of sugar, and in cold climates, freezing or chilling, with the use of ice houses in the summer. These techniques were usually carried out at a local level, which meant that most perishable food was consumed near to where it was produced, and any food processing was usually small-scale and localised. Cattle and livestock, for example, were moved 'on the hoof' from their pastures

The Dust Bowl Years
I was inspired to make this video after watching the History Channel's special presentation of "Black Blizzard" which described in depth how and why the Dust Storms of the 1930's happened. I knew the storms were bad, but in my wildest imagination I could never fathom the magnitude of destruction the phenomenon caused. How the people of the time made it through without going mad is truly astonishing. It is to the survivors and their families that I humbly dedicate this video.

In this video a custom "turntable" was used so that the person being scanned us rotated smoothly, but you can also use an office chair, or move the Kinect sensor and keep the subject stationary. An Alienware 17 laptop was used for scanning because the powerful onboard GPU can process s
