Stokes' Law Exercise for "Rocks and Minerals"
In this activity students are led through a qualitative/semi-quantitative derivation of Stokes' Law. Lab groups brainstorm on and hypothesize about what factors will affect settling velocity. They then time the settling of various objects of known composition and size through different fluids of known viscosity to validate or invalidate their hypothesis. Metamorphic Rocks
The weight of a mountain creates enough pressure to recrystallize rock, thus creating metamorphic rocks. This program outlines the recrystallization process and the types of rock it can create — from claystone and slate to schist and garnet-bearing gneiss. The relationship of metamorphic rock to plate tectonics is also covered.
Sedimentary Rocks: The Key to Past Environments
This program returns to the Grand Canyon: its exposed layers of sedimentary rock allow scientists to peer into the geologic past. The movement of sediment and its deposition are covered, and the processes of lithification, compaction, and cementation that produce sedimentary rocks are explained. Organic components of rock are also discussed.

Rock CAN Roll Rocks NC State
On June 23, What Laura Says and Bright Young Things took to the Witherspoon Student Center stage in support of Rock CAN Roll, a volunteer, non profit, hunger relief organization committed to restocking the dwindling shelves of local food pantries, soup kitchens, safe homes and shelters. NC State students, faculty and staff packed the auditorium, doing their part to help the Food Bank of Eastern NC fight hunger in our area.

The dedication of the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens in The Arboretum at Penn State was held during the Universitys 2010 Blue-White football scrimmage weekend.
