5.1 Introduction The land and shallow water experience at least a brief summer at high latitudes, so terrestrial and freshwater ectotherms can be active during warm periods and hibernate when the temperature is below freezing. In contrast, the polar seas are not warmed significantly by the Sun: the mass of water is too large and sea-ice covered in snow reflects sunlight very well. The seawater beneath the permanent sea-ice is continuously at between −1.9 and +6° C, so its inhabitants complete their entire

8.4 Line spectra: line flux and equivalent width In general, astronomical objects emit both continuous emission and lines superimposed on this continuous emission. The equivalent width is a useful way of describing the relative strength of a line compared to the continuous emission at nearby wavelengths. The flux level of the continuous spectrum is called the continuum level, and at an emission line the spectrum rises above this level, while at an absorption line the spectrum dips below this level, as Author(s):

8.1.1 What kind of evidence has been used in this unit? We have used personal stories as evidence to support arguments about the mutual constitution of personal lives and social policy. The people in our stories all came to, or stayed in, the UK primarily because they saw it as a place of safety, not because of the welfare benefits or services they hoped to receive, and we have contrasted this with dominant discourses about (bogus) asylum seekers for whom welfare in the UK is said to act as a magnet. These dominant or official discourses, echoed b

In particular, you will find you are expected to discover much of it for yourself. Why is this? This is a legitimate question and deserves a full answer. One year, a student at a residential summer school complained I had not taught him properly. I was, he told me, an expert and so why did I not demonstrate how to tackle the problem he was working on and pass my expertise on
