Ejs Parallel Plate Capacitor Model
The EJS Parallel Plate Capacitor model displays a parallel-plate capacitor which consists of two identical metal plates, placed parallel to one another. The capacitor can be charged by connecting one plate to the positive terminal of a battery and the other plate to the negative terminal. The dielectric constant and the separation of the plates can be changed via sliders.

11.4 Signal duration

Since hearing is largely a matter of stimulus reception over time, we would expect time to influence the perception of sound. It has been known for many years that both absolute thresholds and the loudness of sounds depend upon signal duration. The studies of absolute threshold described earlier were all carried out with tone bursts of relatively long duration. For durations exceeding 500 ms, the sound intensity at threshold is roughly independent of duration. However for durations of less th

The Embryo Takes Shape
Genes direct the development of a growing embryo. But not all genes in a cell are active at any given time. Sometimes a cell's location in the developing embryo determines which genes get turned on and which genes stay inactive. This video segment from NOVA: "Life's Greatest Miracle" explores the developmental process of an embryo beginning just two weeks after fertilization. Closed captioning included.  Run time 07:47.
