1 Brian and Sylvia's experiences

Brian and Sylvia, a married couple in their early sixties, were both bikers until Brian was diagnosed as having Parkinson's Disease. Sylvia became his designated carer, but her own health was deteriorating. Brian had an initial assessment by the social services department, followed by annual review assessments for home care. There were also assessments related to Brian's attendance at a day centre. Sylvia had assessments as a carer, but was looking at having an assessment as a service user.

When solar radiation enters the earth's atmosphere, because of the curvature of the earth it warms different regions of the atmosphere to differing extents – most at the equator and least at the poles. This section has described how fossil fuels provide the majority of the world's energy requirements, with bioenergy, nuclear energy and hydropower also making major contributions. Normal galaxies

Figure 8 shows schematically the broadband spectrum of a normal spiral galaxy. It resembles that of the Sun, although the peak occurs at a slightly longer wavelength and there are relatively greater spectral flux densities at X-ray, infrared and radio wavelengths.

3.4 Radio galaxies

Radio galaxies were discovered accidentally by wartime radar engineers in the 1940s, although it took another decade for them to be properly studied by the new science of radio astronomy. Radio galaxies dominate the sky at radio wavelengths. They show enormous regions of radio emission outside the visible extent of the host galaxy - usually these radio lobes occur in pairs.
