Mixing Microworld and Cas Features in Building Computer Systems that Help Students Learn Algebra
We present the design principles for a new kind of computer system that helps students learn algebra. The fundamental idea is to have a system based on the microworld paradigm that allows students to make their own calculations, as they do with paper and pencil, without being obliged to use commands, and to verify the correctness of these calculations. This requires an advanced editor for algebraic expressions, an editor for algebraic reasoning and an algorithm that calculates the equivalence of
COW, a Flexible Platform for the Enactment of Learning Scenarios
Open and Distance Learning platforms are more than system delivering pedagogical ressources. They require mechanisms for the enactment and coordination of pedagogical modules and learning activities. A common solution to express learning paths in learning management systems (LMS) can be the use of Educational Modelling Languages (EML). The next step will be the enactment of these models. For that purpose, workflow management system can be used. These systems formerly reserved for highly structur

Approaches to Studying and Perceptions of University Teaching-Learning Environments: Concepts, Measu
This paper introduces work on a major ongoing research project being carried out
collaboratively between Edinburgh, Durham and Coventry Universities in Britain. The main
concepts and conceptual frameworks being used in the project are introduced, along with a
brief summary of a literature review used to define the most salient aspects of teachinglearning
environments in higher education. The remainder of the paper describes the
development and initial analyses of two questionnaires completed by

The Impact of Reading Self-Efficacy and the Regulation of Cognition on the Reading Achievement of an
The goal of the current study was an investigation of the relationship between reading self-efficacy and regulation of cognition, important components in the development of self-regulated learning, and reading achievement; the impact of the demographic variables of age, student sex and socioeconomic status were also considered. This quantitative quasi-experimental design utilized a sample of eighty-four fourth, fifth and sixth grade students from a rural school district in North Central Pennsyl
Prostate Cancer Screening Decision Making Under Controversy: Implications for Health Promotion Pract
Prostate cancer is a major health problem for U.S. men and is characterized by paradoxes and controversies. Despite the wide availability of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, prostate cancer screening remains a controversial practice mainly because the direct impact of screening on mortality is not yet proven. As the relative value of screening, early detection, and treatment strategies continue to be debated, glaring racial-ethnic disparities persist with African American men experienci
Culturally appropriate health education for type 2 diabetes mellitus in ethnic minority groups
Background
Ethnic minority groups in upper-middle and high income countries tend to be socio-economically disadvantaged and to have higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes than the majority population.
Objectives
To assess the effectiveness of culturally appropriate diabetes health education on important outcome measures in type 2 diabetes.
