Oral History
African American history is both discovered in and continued by an ancient oral tradition. Richard Josey describes the process of restoring a community's voice.
Exploring Magnetism in Solar Flares
Solar flares are the most powerful explosions in the Solar System and play an important role in the Sun-Earth connection. Solar flares are caused by sudden changes of strong magnetic fields in the Sun’s corona. The changing magnetic field converts magnetic potential energy into kinetic energy by accelerating charged gases (plasmas) in the corona. The plasma is channeled by the magnetic field up and away from the Sun. Plasma is also accelerated back down along the magnetic field into the chromo
NeuroLogic Exam: Welcome
Introduces NeuroLogic Exam, a neuroscience tutorial that explores the relationship between neuroanatomy and the neurologic examination. The first principle of neurologic diagnosis is regional or anatomical localization. In order to become skillful the student must understand how structure relates to function of the nervous system. The neurologic examination permits "dissection" of the nervous system and localizes the disease when present. Instead of simply memorizing the components of the exam,
Coordination Exam: Normal Exam: Tandem Gait
The patient is asked to walk heel-to-toe. Note steadiness. Tandem gait requires the patient to narrow the station and maintain balance over a 4-5 inch width. Patients with midline ataxias have difficulty with tandem gait. The first principle of neurologic diagnosis is regional or anatomical localization. In order to become skillful the student must understand how structure relates to function of the nervous system. The neurologic examination permits "dissection" of the nervous system and localiz
Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil War
This three-minute video helps to show how the North thought it would be a short war. The first was the Battle of Full Run; It resulted in huge losses on both sides. It was anything but quick. Lincoln introduced the Emancipation Proclamation, which banned slavery in the Confederate states and changed the rationale for the war. A good overview.
Meiosis and Sexual Life Cycle
This is a general introduction to cell structure and function, molecular and organism genetics, animal development, form and function. Intended for biological sciences majors, but open to all qualified students.
Where's Phyto? An Investigation of Phytoplankon in the Marine Biosphere
As part of this activity, students examine the effects of light and temperature on the phytoplankton population. Using ocean color data from the Coastal Zonal Color Scanner, SeaWiFS, and temperature data from the Multi Channel Sea Surface Temperature dataset, they will learn to identify phytoplankton as a component of Earth's biota, discover the relationships between biotic and abiotic components of Earth systems, interpret remotely-sensed data, and draw conclusions based on the data by diagramm
Solar Radiation and the Earth System
This educational brief is designed to serve as a source of background information on solar radiation studies for teachers and as a reference for student investigations on this subject. Users can learn mathematical concepts and key terms associated with solar radiation as it strikes the Earth.
Back on the street in Sanaa
July 9 - Demonstrators in Yemen vow to stand their ground until President Ali Abdullah Saleh steps down from office. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
The Sniper - Quiz
Students will be able to understand the plot of this short story in more detail.
What a Drag! Activity
The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate how drag affects falling objects. Students will make a variety of shapes out of paper and see how size and shape affects the speed with which their paper shapes fall. They will also be able to see how the weight of an object changes the speed with which it falls.
Modern Day Pyramids
Students investigate the ways in which ancient technologies six types of simple machines and combinations are used to construct modern buildings. As they work together to solve a design problem (designing and building a modern structure), they brainstorm ideas, decide on a design, and submit it to a design review before acquiring materials to create it (in this case, a mural depicting it). Emphasis is placed on cooperative, creative teamwork and the steps of the engineering design process.
Marsbound! Mission to the Red Planet
In this activity, students are challenged to plan a mission to Mars and to design the spacecraft that will carry out their mission. The activity uses the collectible card game format to make it fun as well as educational.
"Desalination and Water Purification, Spring 2009"
" Water supply is a problem of worldwide concern: more than 1 billion people do not have reliable access to clean drinking water. Water is a particular problem for the developing world, but scarcity also impacts industrial societies. Water purification and desalination technology can be used to convert brackish ground water or seawater into drinking water. The challenge is to do so sustainably, with minimum cost and energy consumption, and with appropriately accessible technologies. This subject
