1.6 Vitamin B Vitamin B, often called the vitamin B complex, consists of a whole range of different compounds, some of which have similar functions and work together. However, unlike the families of compounds forming vitamins E and K, the B vitamins are sufficiently different from one another to be given individual names or numbers, and to be listed separately on many food labels. Except for vitamin B12, the body can only store limited amounts of B vitamins and because they are all water-soluble Author(s): The Open University

4.1.2 The network The network is a communication channel in that it conveys data from the transmitter to the receiver. The network may also manipulate data in some way, and it may also store or retrieve data. In a mobile phone system, the network conveys the message from User l's handset to User 2's. It will also store the identity of User 1 and the duration of the call. This data is used to work out the amount to charge User 1, which is a form of manipulation of data. A network can be very comple Author(s): The Open University

Base pairing Nucleic acid folding patterns are dominated by base pairing, which results from the formation of hydrogen bonds between pairs of nucleotides. In nucleic acids, as in proteins, the highly directional nature of this hydrogen bonding is the key to secondary structure. Using Tensegrity and Folding to Generate Soft Responsive Architectural Skins This paper describes the process of designing a prototype for a soft responsive system for a kinetic building facade. The prototype uses lightweight materials and mechanisms to generate a building facade skin that is both soft (less dependent on hard mechanical systems) and responsive (dynamically and simultaneously adapting to spatial and environmental conditions). By combining concepts stemming from both tensegrity structures and folding mechanisms, we develop a prototype that changes dynamica Author(s): Abdelmohsen, Sherif, Massoud, Passaint and Elshafe
3.1.2 Star clusters and stellar evolution Since all the stars in a cluster formed at about the same time, and all have similar compositions, they provide a powerful tool for the study of stellar evolution. The lack of massive stars lying at the top of the main sequence in clusters indicates that they evolve fastest. The ages of clusters are inferred from the position of the main sequence turn-off.

1.2.1 What evidence are we reading? Although we live in a society where a huge amount of information is available in the form of numbers, some of us still feel a mental fog descend when we are asked to deal with them. This is because numerical information is information in a very condensed and abstract form. A number on its own means very little. You have to learn to read it. Numeracy (the ability to work with numbers) is a skill that we can learn. It is a very useful skill, because it allows us to understand very quickly the < Author(s): The Open University
