In April, students in Gene Wingert's Introduction to Field Biology lab teamed up to capture and tag turtles in Wildwood Park in Harrisburg, Pa. The project had a two-fold purpose: track population and growth rates while raising funds for Wildwood Park through an Adopt-a-Turtle event. Five Jeopardy-style games for one to four players were developed in Macromedia Flash to provide beginner health professional learners with drill-and-practice exercises evaluating peripheral nervous system content acquisition and knowledge. The objective was to stimulate self-directed and problem-based learning in the format of NBME anatomy subject examinations. The rationale was to integrate related disciplines into a structured format that is readily accessible for local and distance learning.
For many years, scientists have believed that the southern expansion of the Sahara has been due to human activity. However, results from the AVHRR instrument and its measurements of vegetation suggest a different explanation: rainfall patterns. In drier years (1984 was one of the driest summers in recorded history in Northern Africa), the Sahara expands south, but in wetter years (such as 1994), vegetation moves back and there is no net expansion of the Sahara as had been previously suggested.
