1 The desert climate: An introduction

If you have visited a desert you will have noticed the sparse plant cover, or in certain sandy deserts, the almost complete absence of plant life. The low productivity of deserts derives from their defining feature, which is aridity. Scarcity of water restricts the diversity and amount of plant cover, and in turn the diversity and abundance of animals. However, if you were visiting one of the American deserts after rains, you would be rewarded by the sight of the desert ‘in bloom’, as vas

9.98 Neuropharmacology (MIT)
The neuropharmacology course will discuss the drug-induced changes in functioning of the nervous system. The specific focus of this course will be to provide a description of the cellular and molecular actions of drugs on synaptic transmission. This course will also refer to specific diseases of the nervous system and their treatment in addition to giving an overview of the techniques used for the study of neuropharmacology. This course is offered during the Independent Activities Period (IAP),

6.4 Technology and environment

At the start of this course I asked a simple question: am I damaging the environment by using my fridge? I warned that it wasn't my intention to give a simple answer that we should all stop using refrigerators or all carry on regardless. Instead, we have explored the issue more widely, calling on a range of ideas and background information in the Case Studies. It is time to review some of the concepts we have been using.

2.1.2 Diffraction and interference of light

When light, or indeed any type of wave, passes through a narrow aperture, it will spread out on the other side. This is the phenomenon of diffraction. For example Figure 17 shows the diffraction of water waves in a device called a ripple tank. The extent to which waves are diffracted depends on the size of the aperture rel

The Tree That Spoke - Part 7 of 10
Dharmabudhi is accused of stealing.  There is a public meeting.  The villagers listen to both sides of the story and some start to doubt how kind honest Dharmabudhi really is.  The village wise man says they need a witness.    (2:07)

4.13 Technologies and explicit knowledge

Knowledge-based systems have the ability to analyse specific kinds of information in order to take action. Since we have earlier defined knowledge as arising out of the interpretation of information as mediated by representations, we can claim that in a limited sense such systems can ‘know’ things: they have a representation of part of the world, and they have some rules that allow them to analyse that representation, from which they can decide on a course of action. In that sense, they h

7.343 Neuron-glial Cell Interactions in Biology and Disease (MIT)
The main goal of this seminar will be to study the nervous system from the perspective of neuron-glia interactions. In each class, we will focus on one type of glial cell and discuss its origin, classification and function within the nervous system. Current findings concerning diseases associated with each type of glial cell will be discussed. This course is one of many Advanced Undergraduate Seminars offered by the Biology Department at MIT. These seminars are tailored for students with an inte

1.2.1 Cell–cell contact-dependent signalling

In some instances, cells may communicate directly with their immediate neighbour through gap junctions (Figure 3a). Communication via gap junctions partially bypasses the signalling model we have outlined above in Figure 2. Gap junctions connect the cytoplasm of neighbouring cells via protein channels, which allow the passage of ions and small molecules (s

1.2.10 Summary

  • The shift of the world's manufacturing base from developed to developing economies in the 1970s heralded the beginning of a new global division of labour and the rise of global factories to produce for Western markets. The search for ever-cheaper labour sources undertaken by multinational firms established a new geography of low-cost manufacturing operations which, to this day, remains controversial.

  • The rise of subcontracting as the most flex

5 Staying safe, anxieties and risk

In the activity in this section we will initially consider the ways in which children and adults assess and deal with risks. A particular emphasis will be on exploring the degree to which anxieties and perception of risk affect children's lives – the promotion of life skills as well as their healthy development and wellbeing.

After a discussion of what is meant by risk in today's society, we will consider the practice principles underpinning the broad concept of ‘staying safe’. Yo

3.7 Europe

Two very different European sources of law have had an impact on our legal system since the middle of the twentieth century. In this sense, they are one of our most recent sources of law. These two sources are first, the organisation of member states referred to as the European Union (EU), and second, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). They are distinct sources of law. They each act as a source of law in different ways.

Membership of the EU is by application.

Virtual Sketching: Instructional Low Resolution Virtual Reality Simulations
This research paper describes the implementation of virtual reality immersive simulation studios in academia, facilitated by the use of the ?Virtual Sketching Method? (VSM). The VSM allows the basic expression of architectural forms and the perceptual experience of interior and exterior spaces. It fosters simulations based on render-less (low resolution) visualization in contrast to other simulation workflows based on render-more (high resolution) visualization techniques. It bridges between

6.4.1 Materials selection

Among the common thermoplastics available in the mid-1970s, polypropylene appeared as a front runner on grounds of toughness, density and cost Table 9). However, it is subject to creep (being uncrosslinked) and possesses a low tensile modulus of ca. 1500 MN m−2. Its merit index is 12.7 due to the low density of 0.

1.3 Warm-up activities

A variety of actions might be included in warm-up activities, and there is good reason for keeping these simple and repetitive. If the brain and muscles have to concentrate on learning new and complex patterns of movement, then this takes attention away from raising the core body temperature by 1 or 2 degrees and increasing the heart rate enough to perspire.

Movements might include:

  • walks gradually increasing in speed to a small run;
