4.11 Image and video capture devices

Earlier, we looked at keyboards and scanners as a means of taking text across the boundary.

3.3 Ethnicity

By contrast with ‘race’, ‘ethnicity’ is still widely used to describe differences between groups, although like ‘race’ it is a contested term. The terms ‘ethnic’ and ‘ethnicity’ are commonly used to denote groups of people who share common national or geographical origins, values and beliefs, and customs and traditions. Unlike the notion of ‘race’, ethnicity does not imply innate biological differences but rather similarities derived from belonging to, or being brought

4.2.4 Collecting possible solutions

This is the most creative part of the problem-solving process: it involves breaking the mindset within which situations are normally interpreted. Brainstorming is a good way to generate new approaches, by making sure that even apparently ridiculous ideas are not thrown out in the initial stages. Brainstorming has two basic principles:

  • quantity is more important than quality, in the creative phase;

  • critical comments are not allowed, at

Binding the Interface in Windows Store apps | Migrating apps from Windows Phone to Windows 8

In the previous Quickstarts, we have introduced the app and looked at handling data requests and formatting. In this next video, we will look at binding that data to the interface.

Binding and Windows 8 Templates

Data binding plays a central role in the Windows Store project templates available in Visual Studio 2012. For our project, we used the Grid App template available in Visual Studio 2012 as our base for the Khan Academy

Dr. Iain McGilchrist on The Divided Brain
Renowned British psychiatrist and author, Iain McGilchrist, delivers a lecture entitled Our Mind at War. Drawing from research in his latest book, The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, Dr. McGilchrist explains how an overreliance on ways of looking at the world characteristic of the left hemisphere may be partially responsible for the increase in mental illnesses globally, including depression. His lecture was produced in collaboration with the Lit

3.4 Input and output considerations

CCDs are not inherently able to detect colour, only brightness. So it is necessary to rely on the fact that any colour of light can be made up from the three primary colours of light: red, blue and green. (Note that the three primary colours of light are different from the three primary colours of pigments.) Each CCD in the array is therefore overlaid with a red, blue or green filter and so detects the brightness of, respectively, the red light, the blue light or the green light falling on it

1.1.2 La mairie/l'hôtel de ville

The French use both la mairie and l'hôtel de ville when referring to the town hall. In general, la mairie is used in smaller towns and villages. La mairie is also used to describe the range of functions and services headed by le maire (the mayor).

3 Identity

The activities in this section focus specifically on issues of wellbeing, such as self-esteem, resilience and sense of belonging. They consider how practitioners can support children as they understand and negotiate their identities, and those of other people, in the light of other people's perceptions and beliefs.

There are two activities to help you highlight some of these issues.

1.2.1 Planning your search

Your approach to searching will depend to a great extent on what kind of person you are. In an ideal world, when searching for information for a specific purpose, we would all find what exactly we were looking for at the first attempt, especially if we are in a hurry. However, it’s always a good idea to have some kind of plan when you are searching for information, if only to help you plan your time and make sure you find the information you need. If I was starting to search for material on

3.2.3 Fighting on too many fronts

Although I have dwelt on the agreements relating to agriculture, textiles, and intellectual property, there are some two dozen others, each involving intricate legal and technical details. These include agreements on:

  • Sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures: these are standards applied to imported agricultural products so as to protect plants, animals and humans in the importing country. However, these standards are often arbitrarily used to restric

1 Capturing the oil industry

The oil industry is perhaps the archetypal globalised industry. Dominated by a few multi-national companies, it is highly centralised at the level of corporate power but, like corporations, investment and trade in the oil industry are also highly mobile. The long reach of the global oil economy is a consequence of the distance between the location of significant oil reserves and the location of the major markets for oil. The reserves of oil currently expected to last more than fifty years are

Getting to Know the ACT
This video is a great introduction to the ACT. It informs learners about the semantics of each section of the ACT, tells why the ACT is important, talks about preparation, and taking the test. The video is appropriate for students starting at age 12 or 13 who may be starting their college search and will eventually take the ACT. It is never too early to start preparing, and the more comfortable a learner is with the test, the better he or she is likely to score! (03:31)
