Reading about maps, I have been struck by the number of times that the idea of ‘maps as part of our everyday experience’ has been mentioned. In fact, I was thinking about it recently, when I was preparing to travel from Belfast to London. I left home with a mental map of my journey to the airport – but on the way I found that the road was blocked by a burst water main. ‘Plan B’ was to consult my local road map for the quickest alternative and, in doing so, I wondered i

5.3.1 Regulations

A regulation is a Community act, which ‘shall have general application. It shall be binding in its entirety and directly applicable in all Member States.’ Regulations are directly applicable, which means that once they have become EU law they apply immediately in all EU member states. They do not need implementation by the member states.

Regulations come into force 20 days after their publication in the European Union's official journal, unless otherwise specified.

2.1.1 Probability ratios

Probability calculations are important in many branches of science, but nowhere more so than in genetics. Box 4 describes early work in the field and provides some illustrative data, based on plant-breeding experiments.

Before working with these data, it is important to understand how the results have been presented. Raw data from breeding experiments come in terms of descriptions and numbers, as with the examples given in Box 4, but results are often reported by expressing the numbers
