5.3.2 Effects of structure on viscoelasticity

If a single measurement of ER(t) is taken at an arbitrary but fixed interval of time, say 10 seconds, then it will vary with temperature in a way rather similar to the viscoelastic master curve. Such a curve for atactic polystyrene is shown in Figure 48, where the various zones of behaviour are identif

7.3.6 Laser ablation deposition

Another close cousin to sputter deposition is laser ablation deposition. Ion bombardment of the target is replaced by a focused pulse of light from an ultraviolet laser. Although each pulse may carry only 1 J of energy, this is delivered within 1 ns to a 1 mm spot on the target surface. This represents an astonishing power density and the target surface explodes into vapour that can be caught on the waiting wafer surface. It is vital to scan the focus point across the target surface or you wi

3 Finding and evaluating OERs

When seeking content for adaptation and re-use in open educational contexts there are several tools available to support discovery. Many of these tools are the result of experimental prototyping and short-term funded projects, however, and therefore carry with them a certain amount of risk. Not all are sustained beyond the life of the funding, but these initiatives have sought to use a variety of search technologies to support the discovery of generic and domain-specific OERs. As we move forw

6.5.4 Monitor and critically reflect on your use of IL skills

As you develop your information literacy skills, refer back to the outcomes you hope to achieve and goals you have set yourself. Ask yourself questions such as:

  • am I on track to achieve my outcomes?

  • what difficulties in using information literacy techniques have I experienced and what have I done about them?

  • how have the choices and decisions I made impacted on the quality of my work?

  • do I need to mak

4.2 Subdivisions

In this subsection we formalise the idea of a net by introducing a useful concept called a subdivision of a surface. This is a standard kind of net drawn on a surface, and is defined in terms of vertices, edges and faces. It leads to the idea of the Euler characteristic of the surface.

All surfaces obtained from polygons by identifying edges arise from a net (of sorts) consisting of a single polygonal face, together with the edges and vertices that remain aft

5.4.2 The main body of the interview

Your main objective is to gather information. A practical target is to expect the candidate to talk for 70 per cent of the time. Example 2 describes the kind of conduct to avoid when interviewing.

4.2.7 Some other advice

  • Keep to the subject, and pick the right conference for your contribution.

  • Before you write a message, take time to see what is being discussed and how. Lurking is quite acceptable online.

  • Keep messages short. People don't want to read large chunks of text on-screen.

  • Write a good subject line (title) for your message – people often haven't time to read messages unless the subject line looks relevant.

3.8 Evaluating strategy and presenting outcomes

By now you will have found out about and sampled different resources for learning and used different ways to learn. But the structured approach used in this section is one of the main resources for developing and improving your other key skills.

So how do you know if you have learned? How do you know if you have improved? How do you know if you are meeting the standard for improving your own learning and performance expected of someone doing a course in higher education or using higher
