The beauty and hidden charm of the Large Hadron Collider
In this inaugural lecture, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Nick Brook, discusses some of the latest results from an experiment that uses the Large Hadron Collider. The Large Hadron Collider beauty (LCHb) experiment studies the decay and properties of particles containing heavy (charm and beauty) quarks, produced in the forward region from proton-proton collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It uses the LHC as an intensity frontier machine and has recorded the world's la

7.2 An overview of RFID

The technology behind RFID is relatively straightforward and has been in use in some form for many years. You may have even used it yourself or seen it in use – for example in a 'proximity card' entry system in buildings, and in pet identification where a microchip is inserted just below an animal's skin. But you are likely to hear a lot more about it in the future and increasingly to see it deployed. This is because, at the time of writing (early 2005), the technology is receiving a strong

Job search
Welcome to this Futures workbook on finding work. It is split into several sections describing different techniques for finding work. You can dip in and out of the different sections; however it is not wise to rely on only one mechanism for finding work. It is a competitive market for final year students and new graduates and so you should try many alternate ways to find work.

4.3.1 Copyright

One of the reasons the World Wide Web has grown so quickly, and why it is so interesting, is that anyone can publish (almost) anything on it. This raises a number of problems, however, particularly with the issue of copyright. It is very easy to find information, images, audio and video files on the web. You can then easily save them and incorporate them into your own material. This ease of copying means people often make the mistake of assuming that everything on the web is freely available.

5.1 The behaviour of polymers

The manufacture of polymer products is controlled by two often conflicting demands: the quality of the finished article in terms of its response to its environment and the ease or difficulty of processing it to shape. Both factors are controlled by what is termed viscoelasticity, namely, the behaviour of the polymer in response to applied stress or strain, and temperature. It is important to appreciate the duality in terms of the elastic and viscous responses of polymer solids and poly

Throwback Thursday: Woldemar Weyl
Woldemar Weyl might be refered to as the "Father" of glass science. He was a visiting professor from Germany in the early 1930's, but because of pressures from the oncoming apocalypse that came to be known as the Nazis, he was forced to leave with his family in tow. Once in the U.S. he was made a full-time tenured professor at Penn State. Here he became one of the most revered figures in glass research and was responsible for ushering in a new age of private sector-university led research.
